Get your FCC w/radar Cert. I don't know how many times that was the 1st question out of their mouths when interviewing for an Avionics job.
Also get as many Gen Fam class's as you can Boeing 757, 767...etc as well as Airbus, as well as Collins and King Class's.
    Good luck

Make sure you have experience in both the structural aspect of the aircraft as well as the powerplant. That is important when you go to get authorization from the feds.

I started using jeppesen books my last year in the navy to study for the written's.

While I agree that having an FCC with Radar is good, I would suspect that it could lean you towards doing the electronics work.

Yes, the aircraft are more and more electronic. However as it has been for a long time, there are Airframe and Powerplant technicians that want nothing to do with electrical anything, just as the Avionics techs want nothing to do with the actual aircraft. As Skymech said,

"I don't know how many times that was the 1st question out of their mouths when interviewing for an Avionics job."

I guess the real answer for anyone working in or planning to work in aviation / aerospace, is what is it you want to work on?If you want Avionics that's very fine. If you want to be an engine guy, it may be tough but not impossible. General mechanics, accomplishing a multitude of tasks with often with no specialty are important also. There is also the possibility of working towards the structures, modification and repair. If you lean towards being a general mechanic or structures tech, get as much Advanced Composites background as possible.

Like the Avionics applicant being asked about having an FCC, those with Advanced Composite training and experience have an edge on those that do not.

FWIW, I was recently sent the draft copy for what the FAA and no doubt other agencies are considering in regards to those that work with Advanced Composites. If I were to speculate, this draft could easily be the beginning of something similar to your FCC rating, possibly a rating supplement for Advanced Composites.

You should consider what size aircraft you want to work on. Many are very happy working on small single engine General Aviation products, this has many different paths. Newer stuff in a service center environment, or maybe restoration work. Possibly shops that work recip twins a lot would be for you. Corporate aviation could see you work in a factory, a service center, or possibly one of the larger Repair Stations accomplishing maintenance and upgrades to corporate jets.

There are commuter airlines, and maybe as time passes, the larger airlines.

Some folks contract and continue working on military aircraft, others might work in factories building all sorts of fixed and rotary wing aircraft.

Whatever you decide, understand it is aviation, you may find the work long, and at times not glamorous. You could believe or even in reality be underpaid. Just consider the options, and realize the importance of your work.

well like i had posted a couple months ago i was planning on trying to get a a&p... however i just found out today that i am going to maint. control for probably the rest of my contract just about a year and a half. so does anyone have any experience as a controller? i think this could help for a supervisor type position but not sure how this could play out in the civilian world in aviation.

Retired from the USCG as a helicopter mechanic, got my A&P while active duty. After retirement, went back to college for a mechanical engineering degree. License, A&P, experience, and engineering degree landed me a job with Bell Helicopter as a flight test engineer. Good job with good pay. My advice--couple your A&P to a college degree.
