I know this is a silly/stupid question, but I just bought a 2011 Tacoma 4x4 yesterday (from a Chevy dealership) and I want to ask the experts. I won't be driving it home for a couple of days because they are putting on new brakes and getting it a new inspection.

The options on the automatic gear shift are 4D, 3, and 2-L. What is the proper time to drive in each of these? Which would I use for driving to the store in 2 wheel drive mode? Which would be best for other driving conditions? I've been looking for the answer to this, but I'm not finding it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

One thing I do use the 4 for, is in city traffic (under 45mph), to keep the engine revved up a little bit more, but only because I live in deep south texas and its hot as hell. Really keeps the ac running a bit colder by keeping the fan revved up faster. Other than that, yes, its 99% D.

Just view it as a gear limiter. If you stick it in 3, it won’t shift into 4D on its own. If you stick it in 2, it won’t shift into 3 or 4D and so on. Very useful for towing or driving by the ladies with your 4 banger in high revs. Ladies like high revs

Thank you all for the quick replies. I figured 4D was the one to go for most of the time (and I will be reading through the manual while I wait). Two of my three kids are now in their twenties and I'm pretty psyched about getting this Tacoma. I had an '82 F150 years ago that I ran to about 180,000 miles, but it got traded in for a minivan when we started having kids. All of a sudden, it's 22 years later!
