    I thought Toyota took care of the first 5 oil changes, or 25000 miles.

    If you want to reply on them, fine. People with skid plates would need to hope Toyota technicians (usually oil changes go to entry-level technicians) do not cross-thread the bolts that hold either the entire plate or the small window-plate to access the filter during the change, so people with skid plates often just do it themselves and avoid the risk.

    First two changes are free, at 10 and 20k. The 5, 15, and 25 are little more than tire rotations.


    If you want to follow the severe interval of oil every 5k, the extra 3 changes are at your expense, and don't forget to add the diff fluid change at 15k.

    Considering the size of the bolt threads the skid plates use, you pretty much have to be doing it on purpose to booger one of those. It's easier to cross thread the little stock splash guard. Heck, it's probably easier to cross the drain plug than a skid.

    that is what mine did on the first oil change. Since then i have never used the drain thingy. a bit if a mess, when oil starts to drain out around the cap i shove a pan under and wipe my hands and wait fir it ti stop draining and the proceed. no big deal, that being said the whole process sucks.

    the funnel is definitely debatable. it's nice that it threads in so there's no surprise swear jar donation when trying to change quarts, at least, as i'm prone to do. but this trucks filler isn't that hard to get to.

    the filter drain is as nice as a fumoto valve. i can almost change oil in a nice suit.

    The MotivX filter drain tool is really cool and well worth the money. Makes the filter change nearly ragless.

    I do my own every 5k miles. I did it on the first 500 miles, then 5000 miles, then got the dealer to do my free 10k and 20k but I still do my own. I have the Pro skid plate, no need to remove it as I can reach the plug and filter. I use the supplied adapter drainage thingy with a hose attached to it to drain the filter. I also lay an absorbent rag on the skid plate for extra protection. It's a labor of love, I take my time, clean up as I go and I enjoy knowing it's done every 5k regardless of what is recommended. I have 30k miles on it and just the front and rear diff, tranny and transfer case changed along with the power steering fluid flushed, new plugs, serpentine belt, alignment, new 285s so I'm good until the next change.

    I've watched Chloe Kuo and other YouTubers and go with trial and error...of course, error being making a mess.

    Since installing Fumoto Valve & switching to aluminum housing, I'm getting more acquainted with the quirks of the oil change on my 3rd Gen Tacoma.

    I still curse the 3rd gen Oil change, coming from the 3 minute 2nd Gen change. It doesnt help that I have an aluminum Pelfrey-built skid plate, that I have to drop each time, since it doesnt have the cutout.
