I think a cut up quart bottle will thread into the filler neck. it does on my 2006. it wouldn't be me, if I didn't try it first before I went and bought something. I have an awesome funnel, I never use on my 2006. I pour the first quart and thread it down while it drains. then a quick swipe of a utility knife to knock off the top and poof. free funnel, threaded on. I gotta try.

and I have a clear silicon hose that pushed over the crappy OEM things.

You all do anything with that retainer tab poking off the side if the housing cap?

    Yeah.
In most videos they seem to just ignore it. I slide it off before removal and back on after, but I don't think you have to.

    Are you talking about this?

    upload_2023-11-14_9-9-3.png

This seems like it would need to be torqued more to get the clip touching the straight portion but MAN, was it a bear to twist off!

I don't use a funnel anymore. I use a graduated dispenser. It helps for those 6 quart changes when you're buying 5 quart containers.

    yup. that!

at first glance I thought that was what held the housing in place when you torqued off the bottom cap. no so sure, especially after seeing your photos.

badass. I had one of those OG ones. the galvanized can with the flex hose coming off the bottom. I grabbed it when a gas station went tits-up. lost it in the move to CA.

    but genius, bud. genius.

so let me get this straight. You pour oil from a container, into a container that has a funnel spout, to avoid using a funnel?

I still haven’t been able to completely figure out what the damn little clip is supposed to do.

Not at all. I pour oil from two containers into a container that has a funnel spout.

The funnel is ancillary, it mainly helps in measuring out a hair over 6 quarts.

So for example, I have a 5 quart container that is sitting on my shelf, and it has three quarts remaining. Next oil change I'm going to buy another five quart container. I pour the entirety of the old container into the jug, and then I open the new container and keep adding until I reach my fill line. Boom. And then I can dump that all over my engine and not worry about it.

Toyota takes care of tire rotation every 5K miles, oil change once a year or every 10K miles. Toyota Care service is good for 2 years.

In my case, dealer stripped and lost hex screw on the crash plate on the first oil change. And did not tell me about it. I caught because I always check the car over after service (on my other cars I've had dealers leave off air intake after doing transmission service, overfill oil by a full quart, leave off the engine covers). Dealer ended up order the whole crash plate install kit, with spacer and all bolts, to give me the missing oil door screw.

Next week I am taking Taco for it second oil service and tire rotation (9K miles on the clock, drive 2 cars) to a different dealer, before Toyota care expires in December.
Will replace plastic housing with aluminum one (did the same on wife's RAV4) on the 3rd oil change and install the Fumoto valve.

On the RAV it interferes with filter housing being taken off (hits the rib) and I have to hold it back for a couple of turns. I think of it as a retainer clip.

Good question. I guess I just ignore that little tab. Hasn’t seemed to make any difference. :notsure:

its a sound plan. i like it. until they make a 6-quart jug, it will take 5 jugs to "Run out".

i bought one jug and one $9 quart.

The filter drain cap should come off easy. It's supposed to be less torque than the whole filter. mine will turn the entire filter cover since the last Toyota care service. the dealers often over tighten stuff. it took a 24" breaker bar to get my filter off. I had to just open it full of oil, it makes a bit of a mess but you do what you need to do.
MotivX tools are good especially the cap wrench. I don't like the funnel too much. Its at a weird angle the way the oil filler is on the tacoma I find you have to be careful not to spill oil. I prefer a big funnel from harbor freight more

I use one too, I get the 12 quart boxes of 0w20 that have a bag in them. My OCD appreciates seeing the oil hit the 3 quart line before I pour it in. Twice.
