I bought a used A.R.E V series cap and put it on the truck today and the trim piece on the bottom of the back window sits just above the tailgate which leaves a pretty big gap, the whole shell seems to sit a bit high.I’m using the double bubble seal. Is this right or is something wrong here?

It looks wrong. Is the cap the one designed for your specific truck or just a near fit based on dimensions?

Tag has a 2016 mfg date and says Tacoma. I’m using that double bubble seal.

The label says that shell is made for Access Cab Tacoma.

Yes ,but I can’t see what difference it makes with how it sits on the bed, the beds are the same and according to my research AC and double cabs shells are the same

Take a picture of the side view with your truck and shell.

Since I have no idea how it looks in side view so I guess either move the shell up close to the cab so the back door fit, or if it sit high, then take your truck to the topper place and have them take the topper off and see if something is thick, if so, they will replace it with the right rubber thing (whatever it is called) in there so the shell will fit perfectly.

Side view picture would help us more.

Looks like it sits too high, take it to the dealer and they will take the shell off and replace something underneath the shell.

I noticed the gap between shell and bedside.

Hmm, in theory, I would think it would fit. Maybe the double bubble seal is too thick. Best bet is probably go to your local ARE dealer and see what they say. Nice find on the shell if it ends up working out and the price was right BTW. I don't hate that color against your truck color for a 2nd hand shell.

As you can see here the seal is barely compressed even though the top is snugged down pretty good. Not sure if it could be the problem but I ran two strips of the seal side by side, I had 35’ of it so thought what the hell

That's the problem, too much of seal. Try replace them with one seal strip all the way around.

Edit: No need strips on tailgate, though.

I think you guys solved the mystery. Nice work. So, the million dollar question... How much did you pick the shell up for?

Black shell on Cement Tacoma looks good. A friend of mine has cement shell on his cement Tacoma.

I’m sure the dealer will overcharge and being on a budget I’m going to have to do it my self
I didn’t get a great price on it but didn’t get screwed either but I did put some work into it. I’m thinking the seal is too thick and too dense of rubber, the ESI brand I used before on a different shell was a lot more squishy than this stuff

Maybe give it a little time before taking it off to see if the shell weight settles it to an acceptable height. It can't hurt.

    3" lift? A.R.E cap 285/70/17 moto metal 955 17x9
On my truck they took the plastic off of the bed rails to mount the cap.

Yeah, I’m going to replace it with the ESI bubble stuff, it’s softer than whatever brand this is
