I have a 1998 3.0 4x4 up here on the island to get around, and it sounds like the lifters are dead soldiers at 163k miles.

My '04 has the twin cam 2.3 inline 4 and at 134k miles it sounds smooth as silk, doesn't drip or burn any fluid either.

My old '98 ran like a champ for years and years. I was bummed when they quit making them because I wanted a newer one at the time. But now I have a Tacoma and all is well.

I owned the 3.0 Ranger (manual) for a total of 6 weeks or so. Might as well have gone with a 4 banger it felt so gutless.

What your truck ever in a magazine? It looks familiar like I may have seen it in a Truckin article.

    Quite literally too uh. Haha.

My father bought a 2000 ranger with the 4.0L, 4x4 and auto trans new, which was later sold to me. I drove it until 230k when some jackass rearend the truck totaling it out. I never had a single problem with it the biggest repair was front wheel bearings and shocks at around 190k.

    Welcome Ranger X!
I had a 2003 Ranger. The 4.0 was a reliable beast but the electronics had so many gremlin problems that I finally sold it and picked up a 2016 TRD OR. Miss the ranger power but not the irritating issues with broken power windows, phantom door and seat belt alarms...

I used to be an S10 guy, but man those Tacos were freaking cool looking and reliable as hell. I finally made the switch to Tacoma this year and could not be happier!
    Tacocat spelled backwards is tacocat.
    Cheers mate!

[IMG] This was my last S10. It was totalled 3 times and I always talked the insurance company into selling it back to me for like 50 bucks. I eventually sold it for $4600 - remember cash for clunkers? Thanks Obama. Poor truck - it had about 450,000 miles on it.

Had my taco for a month now. 1300 miles and the quirks of the transmission have significantly reduced. Only issues are the hilly backroads that it shifts into 5 or 6 gear and then you hit the uphill and it needs to shift down two gears. Still a little too eager to shift back into a higher gear even after the downshift in some of these situations though. Using ECT basically eliminates the issues but takes it to the other extreme of staying in the lower gear too long. Then again, ECT is for towing/hauling not for everyday. The truck is not under powered as I've seen some suggest. It's just the programming of the shifts points that need a tweek.

Overall, I love this truck and would recommend it if you are considering buying.
