Currently have the stock firestones on my 23 TRD Sport and they have not been doing very good in the snow so far this year which isnt very surprising. I've been pricing out sets of A/T tires and am currently thinking about putting a pair of wildpeaks or toyo open country AT3s on my truck. Im located in the Canadian Prairies so our winters can get really bad and I know a dedicated pair of winter tires would probably be best but would like to hear what others have been running year round and how they like them.

I swapped my stock for the Toyo AT3s and very happy so far in the wet and a the snow in CO - night and day difference, which I guess isn't hard as the stock ones were shocking

I have the General Grabber ATXs. They have the 3PMS rating and are studdable.

I hear the Mickey Thompson Baja boss’s are very good in winter weather as well.

I've personally run Falken Wildpeak AT3W, KO2, Dynapro AT, and currently Mickey Baja Boss AT.
    • Wildpeaks - Solid all-arounder. Not the best at anything, but they dealt with Montana winters excellently. Would buy again.
    • KO2 - Great everywhere but ice in my experience. I just felt like they would walk much sooner than other options.
    • Dynapro AT - I can comfortably say don't buy these. Not good at much.
    • Baja Boss AT - Current tire. So far really like them. They have been confident in snow/ice/slush while in 4wd.

Tire size might be as important, or more important, than the specific tire.

My preference is for a tall, skinny tire. I’m currently running Wildpeak AT3W in 235/85-16. Traction and control in snow are very acceptable to me, road noise is minimal on dry pavement, and ride comfort is not noticeably different from stock that I replaced at 1k miles.

It's -35 in the prairies right now, ideally get a set of winters. I live in this winter wasteland.

I ran a 4 season all terrain (cooper at3 4s) for one year then immediately put on winters again.

If you can only do one set look for the most amount of sipping (the thin squiggly lines), tires like the Cooper AT3 4S.
    upload_2024-1-14_9-35-32.png

Toyo AT3 and Falkens are good in snow but lack the sipping to help on ice and packed snow.

In contrast here's a mid grade winter tire.

"thinking about putting a pair of wildpeaks"
I have about 4500 miles on the Wildpeaks, on my 2021, they have been great so far in the rain and snow. I live on a windy mountain road, coming down the road in the morning can get a bit sporty. When it comes to ice, dedicated snow tires or chains...

I'm on my 3rd (soon to be 4th) set of the Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT (Load Range C for the deeper treads). They've been outstanding here in Maine during the winter months in all different types of snow/conditions.

I agree about siping for traction. Note OP specifically asked about AT tires. I ran Cooper AT3s (not 4s) on my previous Chevy 1500 and my experience was positive for dry road grip, wet/light snow, and noise. Also, C-rated tires are very comfy for a DD and likely will get improved mileage over a more aggressive E-rated tire.

Lots of trade-offs to consider, especially when running only one set of tires.

Cooper AT3 XLTs get my vote. Do very well on wet and snow covered roads

The key is MBE (multiple biting edges). This comes from shape and siping. The more u have the better the traction.

I have no opinion on these without studs but the yoko G017 has been excellent to me now that we finally got some true winter to run them in. I compare these to my blizzak dmv2's on my work truck and in snow they are about par the second ice shows up the clear edge to having the studs shows itself. Where I run the f150 in 4hi I can boot and un weighted in 2hi in the tacoma. Does it still slide yep doesn't make you invincible but very confidence inspiring tire.

To be fair the siping shown on the Toyo in that pic is for the LT model. P- and euro-metric have significantly softer rubber and a lot more sipes. So choosing non-LT Toyo probably would achieve about equal winter performance to some other better winter performance all terrains.

I have the Toyo AT3 and they’re pretty darn good on wet, snow, ice, packed snow. Have the SL version and keep them at 30 pounds ea. very surefooted. Another thing I got wider wheels (8.5”) therefore wider tires allowed. That wider footprint really helps the center of gravity. Now to go deeper down the rabbit hole I got 0 offset so they stick out a little. Making an even wider stance. This little bit helps the side to side control of the vehicle. Wider, softer AT tires with not so much air pressure in a key on frozen roads. upload_2024-1-17_21-24-26.jpgupload_2024-1-17_21-25-18.jpgToyota has an already advanced winter driving 4WD system (believe me i’ve owned multiple other brands) so the right setup will get you cranking down the road with confidence. If I wanted an excellent winter AT for Canada I’d look at the Michelin Defender ATX. They have a crap ton of siping and last forever. The only issue use I see with my Toyos is tread life. The Michelins are made to last and have lots of tried and true rigs that go through some tough winters year after year

Nokian Outpost NAT has the best snow/ ice performance of any AT tire on the market.

We are in the BC Interior. Wife ran brand new BFG KO2s last winter, and we switched this year to some Nokians that had been used for one winter. Night and day difference.

Just get the real winter tires.
