All of those bed steps, tailgates with steps, bumper steps, are aimed at older demographics. Whether or not they need pickup trucks is irrelevant. They certainly want pick up trucks and they want convenience features. Full size pick up truck buyers are likely older and more affluent. GM laughed at Ford when they came out with the first tailgates with this sort of thing a few years ago. Then they saw how many Ford was selling and they decided to outdo them.

Like you, if I need one I'll buy a step stool and toss it in the bed. Probably just one of the plastic one step set ups. Or, one that I can also use as a seat. Hmmmm, I have one of those hanging around the garage...

Wish Tacoma tailgate becomes more versatile, maybe a pull out step bar like fords? Or open two ways ,up and down and side ways?

    Where is the sidegate?

I'm surprised no manufacturer offers a sidegate option. I guess it would weaken the integrity of the bed.

Speaking from experience I'd take the corner bumper steps on any truck over a step stool, if you're in and out of you truck bed all day it doesn't matter how old you are, those steps are awesome. Sure wish Toyota and Ford had that as an option.

My left knee has been angry (mostly my fault). What I do is just jump on to the TG backwards and land on my butt. Spin around and stand up.

Chevy had that ages ago. A pic is in this link with aftermarket support for a friggin' side gate:

The bumper steps are awesome (especially if your boots are wet/muddy). The side step on the 2020+ HD GM trucks is very handy to anyone under 6’2” tall. I guess if I was getting in and out of a Tacoma bed, the step really isn’t needed. A HD truck? These things keep getting taller and taller every year it seems.

That tow hitch makes a great step. But off road? It will hinder and drag every time you go up a hill. Every trailer hitch I had , drag but help protect the bumpers from being drag.

Today they make a trailer hitch with a skid plate and steps.

I do like this better then the step Toyota have on the rear corner at the bottom of the bumper.
I just found out that she got the truck back a few days ago. It took them 3 months to find a replacement bed.

This Chassis Unlimited Tacoma Octane Rear bumper, if all metal! This is the way to go.
Thank you for sharing this. If my bumper needs a replacement, the all medal bumper will offer more protection then the factory’s bumper.

This Chassis Unlimited makes some cool stuffs, and all American made.

Ok old fashion, but works for me.3ABB32E8-2789-4847-80AE-F562F6368C95.jpg. It is always in the bed of the truck, has a short rope and hook to the bed stiffers.

Who makes this rear bumper? I searched a bit and couldn't find this exact one.

Frontier Truck Gear, I got a real good deal on mine about a year and a half ago, unsure about now a days..... It's a solid piece, like 200 lbs, keeps the stock tow hitch in place. Got it off eBay.

I've got giant sliders I welded onto my 2500hd from these guys, they're awesome, great metal work, I just welded them to my frame, perfect. You will like Chassis Unlimited stuff, nice quality American made stuff.

You've got it right, I use that as a step onto the bumper and into the bed, I don't take the goliath beetle into difficult off road situations, in Florida, all we have is mud and sand, no real terrain. But I really like that hitch shown, is that yours?

I had to use my motorcycle jack to install mine, so it may have weighed that much, but I don't think so. It is a heavy duty bumper.
