I’ve always liked midsize Toyota trucks since my uncle’s T-100 from back in the day, I just never had a need for one. Fast forward a lot of years later and now I have a 4 month old and a Camaro (50th anniversary - miss that car already). My wife already traded her GTI for an Outback and for the first few months that worked out fine. Once she went back to work it only took a couple of times putting the kid in the back of that car to realize it’s not the right car for right now.

The hunt is on for a Lunar Rock TRD OR MT. I live in NC and the inventory is sparse to say the least so I expanded my search from FL to TN to PA and everything in between. It only took a few weeks to realize that truck was a unicorn. Hell, any new Tacoma was. I also wasn’t happy with the trade in numbers they gave me for my Camaro so I decided to try private party. It sold within hours. Now I’m panicking trying to find a truck. I expanded my criteria quite a bit but even then I was having trouble finding anything. I must have been talking to 35+ dealerships at the same time.

Finally I decided to hit the used market. I found a ‘20 Mag Gray TRO AT with 10k miles for under market value at some random Honda dealership in VA. It’s got the pro grill, step rails, tonneau, led upgrade, etc., and they didn’t advertise any of it. The thought was to rock this truck for a year or two and find the unicorn. 4:30 PM yesterday the finance manager calls me to finalize the paperwork and take my down payment. Done deal.

As I said I was talking to a lot of dealerships. At 11:09AM a dealer in TN texts me and says they have a TRO but it’s silver - meh. I didn’t respond to her and finished up with the ‘20. A couple hours after finalizing that deal she sends me another text. We also have one in Lunar Rock. At first I dismissed it but it took less than 10 minutes to ask about the details. She sends me the spec sheet and it’s a freaking manual. We chat about the details for a bit and then she tells me it’s reserved. At this point I’m actually a little relieved.

Today I get a call from the GM saying it’s available. I dismiss it again. 15 minutes later I called him back and asked him to write up the numbers for me. Come to find out this dealership does not markup their prices so it’s straight MSRP. I couldn’t resist and I pulled the trigger. So now I have two Tacomas in my name and nothing in the driveway. The Lunar won’t be ready until the end of December so I’m going to hang onto the ‘20 and private party sell it. I’ll definitely make my money back so I’m not worried about that. Either way I’m beyond happy that the search is over.

TL;DR: Dumb dumb buys two trucks within 24 hours
