Craziness. Thanks for schooling me. This whole time thought it was manuals. Damn it. I hate to mis-inform people. :anonymous:

Thanks David! Before reading this, was confused between a 2012 DBC Sport and Off-road. I will definitely get the trd off road when the time comes!

David, you have mentioned a few times that when ATRAC does not seem to get you out of a stuck situation, to put your foot in it and "let ATRAC work".

Since ATRAC disengages after 3mph, when you put your foot in it, aren't you actually disabling ATRAC?

I guess that explains one time when my rig just stalled going up a steep dirt/gravel hill. It was trying to prevent it from rolling back?

That is pretty lame, and exactly what I was thinking would happen: with the rear locked and ATRAC on, if you give it enough throttle you can spin the tires, and disable ATRAC on accident. Turning your front into an open dif.

    Thanks for the vid.

wodering why you thought this was the case after all I have posted? always have a trac on in low 4 which usually is no more than 30 to 40 mph usually less. posting from my phone so excuse poor punctuation.

Something else, A trac only works when you loose traction which means you stop moving so speed is 0 or very very low. even if you locked the rear, not sure of any change in A trac performance except it only works the front when rear is locked.

    My observation and follow-up comments:

    1) Yes... a front locker is better (okay?).

    2) Toyota doesn't have it, so A-TRAC is what we are talking about (Toyota has that and it is included).

    3) Your tires in that silt/ sand/ dirt and dug into it (indicates over inflated tires for the terrrain (~20 psi or less recommended for off pavement four wheeling to improve traction/ floatation).

    4) When you stop moving forward in a hill climb in 4WD, turn your tires left and right to 'grab' fresh terrain... Don't stay in the pre-loosened soft dirt.

    5) It is when you are trying to climb out of that hole you should have turned your tires, and put your foot into it... Never surrender to dirt!

    6) The final attempt on the video, your left front tire was doing nothing which indicates a) your A-TRAC was not on so your other tire was spinning only; or b) you were not in 4WD.

If A-TRAC was on, both front tires would be rotating at the same speed (just like a locker does), since A-TRAC matches tire rotation across the axle... using brakes instead of differential gears.

    Try agian!

No denial... your A-TRAC doesn't work... no wonder you don't like it!

Mine has NEVER failed me, and I love it... If you look at the You tubes of A-TRAC on FJs and 4Runners in places like Moab, you see it takes those rigs up the rocks following beefed up lockered-out rigs. Sure, A-TRAC is not as smooth as front lockers, but it still gets the Toyotas there. To save 2-3 thousand dollars, I will take the less smooth A-TRAC any time!

I would hate mine if it didn't work... take it back if you want to have as much fun as I do off road (real off road low range stuff) or just the security of knowing you can go anyplace you want and back!

So, this is just a game for you to raise your post count some more and distarct from serious Tacoma drivers who are interested in the facts? Please grow up Christian... I am only and always trying to help with honest answers. I am sorry your Tacoma does not perform as well, or that your rear springs bottomed out. It isn't my fault, so just back off the personal attacks, please.

Workman thinks Whippersnapper has no life, because he is always trying to stir shit up with his ATRAC posts, and he posts his opinion in almost every thread on TW. That must be a full time job for Whipper, because Workman has a life and could never find the time to be an asshole on the internet every hour of the day. Whippersnapper claims to "have ATRAC but he's no ADERP," but Workman thinks that Whippersnapper is the biggest ADERP on TW. Worse than DavidK, at least David has some decent info about it.

The only reason that this thread got pretty lame, is because of posters like you Whippersnapper. You are lame. Workman is now heading out to enjoy his day snowboarding, where Tacoma's and ATRAC are meaningless.

    Carry on kids.....

Chris thinks that Workaman must think that Chris has no life either. Chirs is now cunfused, and going to drink more coffee.
