2000uzj, Did you watch the videos I posted in post #1 of this thread? It will show you some good examples of A-TRAC on the tacoma. They are short but pretty good for 1 man, a camera, and his truck. :)

yep, I did watch them. I'll have to watch them again and pay attention to what's going on. Do the Tacoma ATRAC shutdown after 8 seconds to prevent brake overheating?

No they do not. However we do know that the skid control ECU does monitor the temperature of the brake pads and brake actuator, if it gets too hot it will temporarily disable itself to protect the system.

I have never seen mine overheat, there is only one person on TW that I am aware of that has claimed to overwhelmed the system to temporarily disable it.

I'm interested in seeing which Gen ATRAC the new Taco's have. It really kicks ass in a heavy armored cruiser, I would love to know how the newer stuff performs. Do you know if you have a 2 pinion or 4 pinion front diff?

I don't know. Here is a link to the FSM where you can search
No. At least it has not been discussed here before... However there is a yellow-wire mod that allows the use of TRAC in 4Lo. But its only useful to people who don't have A-TRAC.

There is for the FJ Cruiser and the 100 Series that has the rear locker. I'm sure if you where to look at the EWD for the taco you could find the circuits and send a false signal to the ECU to make it think it is in low. On our rigs, you can only engage the rear locker in low, I think its stupid. So you tap into PIN 7 on the ECU and route a 12V batter on a switch and when you turn it on the ECU thinks it's in low, therefor enabling the rear locker use in high range

    gawd I ramble a lot

lol. that seems way to complicated. I wanted to do it for my Fj, just to have more options, but was hoping itd be somthing simple like look under the wheel and clip the bright red wire that says "clip here". Can the locker only be used in 4lo on an FJ too?

I'm not sure, I wish it was that easy too! I disabled my DRL's and it was like re-wiring the space shuttle.

Manny, are you a member of any FJ forums yet?

Curious. I wrote a DIY to splice a toggle switch into the DTRL signal wire on the Taco. For us it was one wire. :p

Hey what's your story anyway? Are you looking to buy a Tacoma?

nope, I'm a forum junkie :D . If there is a button with the word "post" on it.

I went wheeling with a few members on the board and they said I should join. I enjoy learning about other Toyota 4WD's and learning about them. No offense to the Tacoma's, but they aren't my style, I like them but just would not serve my purpose. I'm not saying I wouldn't drive one, I just wouldn't buy one. I have a Landcruiser and damn am I happy with it.

Yea Im a member of an FJ forum, but there are several reasons I dont frequent it much.

    1. Its plagued with Ads, its extremely annoying

    2. Its very slow, and hardly anyone posts.

    3. If I frequent the forum to much I might start wheeling the truck and destroy it like I did to my Tacoma.

    broker... thanks for the video.

Now, can you go back to that hill and crawl up it, slow?

You see, 2WD folks need momentum to get through difficult places, and break things. We 4X4s can impress others by not needing momentum... and we don't break parts (usually)! Just cruise on up in L4 and A-TRAC.

that takes the fun out of it. plus there was a nice lip at the top that i needed the momentum to get up with the awesome stock tires im running. the first try i had at it i didnt have enough bump to get up and over it. i got to the top and just spun all four tires tring to push up and over it.

Okay... but I would still like to see you crawl up, even if you have to back down. Tires shouldn't have spun (limited slip/A-TRAC) unless both sides were equal loss of traction, as A-TRAC matches wheel rotation just like a locker would match them.

Do you have Rugged Trails (for stock)?

    Thanks!

yea rugged trails and both sides are spinning at equal speeds. the hill was just so loose all four tires were spinning at the same rate. ill get another angle video of the failed attempt later today

The latest generation of ATRAC incorporates a single digital (active) sensor per wheel. It is capable of detecting above .5kph. The older systems used a analog (passive) type, of sensor which is far less accurate.

So, that would be 4 sensors... I knew we had an awesome truck!

Since this is a A-TRAC video thread, here's one that I posted on the A-TRAC vs. Locker debate thread, a couple months ago...

It seems to have been made by a Toyota dealer, and it isn't all that good (he makes the mistake of saying VSC is on with A-TRAC). However, it is an EXCELLENT demo of how A-TRAC makes the rear locker useless in getting you moving in the situation shown. Only one tire (front right) has traction, and is blocked... but with A-TRAC, pulls this Tundra over the block! Without A-TRAC, the normal open differential in L4 would have diverted torque to the front left tire on rollers.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1MOEZYAv5Q&feature=player_embedded

I would like to see the truck in H4 with TRAC to see if it too would be able to pull over that block using that one tire.

David, that dealer video you posted is great. It's simple and effective. Thanks.

It find it sad that Toyota corp doesn't have very good promotional videos to demonstrate A-TRAC, they insist on explaining it with audio during a short video.

Toyota did make some new videos to feature the new 4Runner, The 4-Runner ATRAC video is in post # 43
