My girl wants to go get her masters at UC Davis. She's from SoCal, we reside in Bama currently attending college here. I'm from Florida and Bama.

We were originally going to just go straight to SoCal but UC Davis is up N. Any tips, people that live near there?

I already know it's going to be a shock just paying rent, for a 3 bedroom biggggg house in BFE we pay 250 each a month for utilities, rent, internet so like 1k and I know that's probably what, tripled out there?

Beside the huge cost of living increase, I can't wait to get out of redneckville and actually be able to attempt so real wheeling. Anyway, it's a year out, but better late than never:cheers:

you will enjoy it. just think how expensive it would be for you to take a trip to Tahoe from 'Bama and you can justify the $$ spent on not traveling to Tahoe plus everywhere else and you get to go more often.

    Welcome to Cali'... almost

Welcome to Cali. West Sac is only about 20 minutes away from davis and is a little bit more affordable than davis if you and your lady start looking in that area. You'll be closer to sac, lots more things to do, places to eat etc. Davis is a college town/suburbs. So its more expensive. Good luck man!

Davis is dirt cheap compared to SF and LA. I am a Berkeley/Stanford alum.

In Davis you can do lots of cow tipping for fun. Couple of my friends went to Davis for graduate school, we would pick them up and go to Sacuglytown for Korean BBQ

    Good luck

Davis is a really nice town and the UC is terrific. I lived there for about 5 years and only moved away because of work. I rented a big 4br house with 2 car garage and decent size yards for $2200/month with friends, and had friends paying around $1100/month for their own 2br apartments. Not much wheeling in the direct vicinity though--there is Prairie City on the east end of sac about 45 min away, but it's really just for testing your stuff before going out to the boonies.

Tahoe is only 2 hours though, and the Sierra Nevada is full of 4wd trails. Davis is about 2 hours from the trailheads of the Rubicon and Fordyce--you will see lots of crawlers being towed on flatbeds down I-80. Oh, and don't ever drive between sac and Davis between 4pm and 7pm. There is a floodplain between them, and only one highway (I-80). It's stop and go during rush hour and a lot of Friday nights during ski season.

is Sacramento far from the school? I'm sure housing would be cheaper there, but if the gas to get back and forth is a lot it will equal out

@TacoPretzel89 West sac is 15-20 mins away. in traffic... could be longer. 13.6 miles according to google maps. You could even live in dixon, ca if you want to feel a little country like back home. About 10 miles or less to UC Davis. Davis compared to surrounding areas are just extremely expensive because of the students, and by that meaning 2-3 mile radius from the school. If you're farther out. youll save some money. good luck

West Sac isn't that far, it just depends where in sac you look for housing...could be 15min to an hour without traffic depending. Sac is huge. Traffic gets so consistently terrible between the two I definitely would not suggest it though. It can easily turn into a two hour drive even it's only 13 miles.

If you want cheaper housing than Davis, look at Woodland just north of it. It's a 10 minute drive, has less crime than sac, is cheaper, and is much nicer than Dixon. It has a Costco and a Walmart too (and an outdoor shooting range if you're into that sort of thing). There is never traffic between Woodland and Davis, and there are multiple back roads you can take in addition to the freeway. It also lets you avoid I-80. In general, I would avoid driving on I-80, even from Dixon if you can. CA is so incredibly overpopulated compared to most of the country it's hard to believe until you see it. I-80 is the main corridor between the Bay Area, Sacramento, Tahoe, and Nevada. Traffic is always a nightmare somewhere on it.

Added to the list of research areas then, thanks. Yeah, the potential of those highways to turn into quagmires was my real concern about living so near a city.
I'm definitely into shooting lol, we just walk outside here though so I will really have to get into the mindset of everything being so controlled out there.
