    98 tacoma 3.4 auto a340

for awhile now my tranny has been having issues with going into reverse, i put it in reverse and it takes abit befor it actually goes into gear. seems like it sits in nuteral until i give it abit of gas and if i give it to much gas it goes in hard and feels like im spinning/chirping my tires but they arnt actually breaking loose, something seems like it is slipping. also when i first got my truck and i was in drive and stopped at a stop sign or light and let off the break at idle it would roll forward like a normal auto does but now it just sits there until i give it some gas.

it seems to do alright with light driving around town but last couple times i went out wheeling as i was pushing my truck harder than normal on road driving my tranny would start to slip real bad to the point where it wouldnt even move the truck while in 2wd 4hi or 4low, have to let it cool down for awhile then it would do alright at moving it forward but if i gave it any decent amount of gas it would start to slip again.

What might my problem be? silenoids, torque converter? should i just replace my tranny or try to fix what ever is wrong with the one i have now... i can get a used auto for 550$ + a 5 hour drive to pick it up or 200$ to ship

Tranny oil is more brown than it should be but I still think the problems alot worse than just changing my tranny oil.
