I have a 1998 Tacoma 5-Lug that has served me reliability since 2004. I replaced the head gasket two years ago and it lasted about 30k. Last month the engine severally overheated out of nowhere. I been climbing 4000 ft on a daily basis and was almost to the top. When the temperature gauge spiked and I pulled over as soon as possible. After 12 hours with no cell service I finally managed to flag a tow truck.

I think a coolant leak developed or maybe the coolant cracked the block once it got bellow freezing. I had noticed a small backfire when engine breaking previously. But, blamed it on sparkplugs. Temps always stayed at 180-200 tops previously. I think the engine is toast since it has developed a severe miss fire, barley runs and dies when you put it into gear. In addition combustion gasses are coming from the radiator. Although, I found no coolant in the oil. Reverse was also going, but was workable.

Anyhow.... I was planning to do a pre-runner frame swap / restoration this summer to convert to a 4wd and had managed to find a suitable rolling frame. But, I won't have time until summer to do that swap.

In the meantime I managed to find a donor with a 2001 3rz and kickdown automatic transmission. With the harness and ECU. My other option is a direct swap 1999 2.4 or a 2003 2.4 that I would presumably have to swap my harness with. Although my harness is a tad crusty.

I would prefer to do the 3rz swap with the ECU and transmission from the donor truck. I do not know if the 5 Lug frame will fit a A340E trans or if the new ECU / engine would work with my A43d transmission. I know that the manual W59 transmission have the same mounting points. If it's just a new drive shaft those are readily available.

The only reference I can find is from BartMaster1234 who says

"The A340E very well may be able to fit. The earlier 5-lugs with the 5VZ-FE v6 was mated to the A340E, as it is in 6-Lug trucks."
