I purchased and installed the TRD PRO Exhaust ($699.00) this week hoping that this would help with the annoying noise. Unfortunately, it did not help! This may seem crazy to some and I even thinks it's crazy but I really do like Tacoma's and have had many over the years. My dealer is willing to work with me (whatever that means) in trading in my Tacoma which only has 2,900 miles. This would be on a Tundra which I really don't want or need such a big truck but I really can't live with this horrible chirping noise either. The perfect solution would be to get my truck fixed but I really don't think we will ever see that as the outcome for this issue. Through my research it appears that Toyota did try and fix the Scion chirping issue but then they backed away from that position and started down the path that the noise was normal. What do you think? Should I trade it in on a Tundra?

I can't believe they actually stated that it is caused by California gas on your work order. Absolutely ridiculous! What about all of the other car brands and models out on the road that don't have this issue including 3rd gen Tacoma's. I have tried Marvel Mystery oil and three other gas brands and octane levels without any luck here in Oregon. In my opinion, we should not even have to be selective where we buy the fuel.

I would trade it for the Tundra If I were you.

Then, if you still like the truck, wait until they get the direct injection pump bug, and other issues all squared away. If ever they will or can.
I bought Toyota mainly for reliability, not for looks. For that, there's the GMC Canyon, among other choices. And as long as mine stays trouble free, I'll be happy. Toyota needs to keep that in mind.
But that's just me, your mileage may vary.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I have the chirp as well, I've only had the truck a few days. 7k miles. I'll have to go have a talk with the dealer about this.

I hope toyota does a TSB or something for it. Mine has been trouble free sense the pump and cam thing for the pump was replaced. Hope you all can get it squared away.

Seems like this thread is getting larger by the day...

Mine has also been chirp free since the new fuel pump was installed. I certainly would be frustrated if I had to deal with the chirping noise but it was fixed like TacoFister's truck. This thread has certainly made me much more aware of surrounding noises each time I drive my truck. Again, the bottom line is the majority Tacoma's are not chirping and Toyota needs to address the trucks chirping with a lasting fix even if it means changing the fuel pump several times. I suggest being persistent with your dealer, there's too many success stories out there. Best of luck.

Not normal and I would not trade it! I believe Toyota is trying to avoid the lemon law by saying that to customers.

Take it nobody has had a direct injection car before. HPFP always "chirp" toyotas have just had louder than what I've usually heard. M3 was notoriously loud to the point people thought it was in need of a valve adjustment.

I currently have a Chevrolet direct inj vehicle at home that does not chirp with almost 22k miles on it. I have had another prior to my Tacoma that did not chirp. I have also had a Ford Ecoboost in the past that did not chirp. I'm gonna have to call BS on your claim that this is normal.

Call BS all you want but I say head down to a toyota dealership and go start one of the 86 or over to subaru and start up the BRZ. Their chirping is way louder on the HPFP. Theyre also on their 4th pump revision because of so many complaints about them being loud. Nothing wrong with them, just loud. The Chevys and Ford probably use more sound deadening around their pumps. I did a 15 second google search and found many complaints about the Ecoboost fuel pump chirp. Its normal whether you want to believe it or not.

I got my 2016 in the spring and promptly took it back to the dealer where I complained about the chirping noise. They said it was "normal" and sent me on my way. Since then, I have listened to a few other 3rd Gen Tacomas and none sound like my vehicle. I understand ticking engine noise, which I can live with, but the chirping might send me over the edge.

Not normal or all of the Tacoma's would be chirping and I would have not purchased mine. There is a possible fix known as replacing the fuel pump if your dealer is willing to cooperate and make the repair, Toyota will pay for it too! Most repairs including TacoFister and mine were resolved but a few replacements noted the chirping did return. A number of documented repairs done by other owners and dealers on this thread is available and can be referred to your dealer to hopefully deflate the functioning normal stuff. Does that mean the higher percentage of non chirping trucks are not normal? Best of luck

    Hi,
I just discovered this forum and thread about 2 weeks ago.. My son bought a brand new 2017 Toyota Tacoma and about a week later he heard the same chirping sound that many of you have so he took it in to the dealership where he bought it.. Long story short, they acknowledged that the noise is coming from the high pressure fuel pump, then I heard words like, "normal", "characteristic", and "it's designed that way".. but they refused to change out the pump. So I spoke with the Service Manager and he eventually agreed to do a "goodwill" change-out.. Hopefully that will take care of the problem!
Btw, somewhere in the thread someone mentioned that the ethanol in the gas could be causing it.. So while his truck was making noise, just to see if it might be the ethanol he filled his tank with non-ethanol gas, and by the afternoon of the next day, the noise was gone!
My thoughts: Toyota and the dealerships customer service have proven to be very disappointing concerning this issue!!
Tacoma owners need to take it to a higher level to resolve this issue!!

Folks... get the Hp fuel pump and cam thing changed out. Changing fuel type is a band aid...

Dido! The ethanol fuel could cause the problem however, ethanol fuel is what most service stations have available for drivers today except a few specialty stations and of coarse there's additives. The 2016-17 Tacoma should be well engineered to operate and not chirp on most of the fuel offered today without spending extra dollars to band-aid this problem. Also, a dealer should not have to do a good will repair but glad they changed it for you, Toyota has and will pay for it! Mine was also replaced and has been silent since but I would not hesitate to go back to the dealer for another one if this problem returned. Not normal!

Yes, I absolutely agree that changing fuel type is a band aid.. But in the meantime, for those who are waiting for the work to be approved and completed, hopefully it will take care of the annoying chirp until the part is changed out..
You're right, it shouldn't be like this..

Hey guys, I too have the wonderful cricket hiding under my hood. Took it in to the dealership yesterday and was told that they've had a few other Tacos come in recently with the same issue. Toyota says it's "normal" and they're not doing anything about it right now. The service guy said Toyota issued a memo out to their Techs recently saying it's "normal".

I guess we will have to wait until they acknowledge the issue and fix it. I am glad I found this thread. For a while there I thought I was alone and this sound was only driving me insane. To everyone above, I feel (hear) your pain!
