Does the sound go away at higher then like 600 or so rpm? Mine does.

As stated by others, its the High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP). My BRZ with the Toyota 4D-S system has the same issue, as do all of the "Twins". Same story...first 300-500 miles there's no sound, but then the annoying crickets appear.

Truck is still new, and I think they have been refining the design of these fuel pumps for years. So maybe it is more rare (good thing). Also probably fewer reports of it in Tacomas so far compared to the few years (since 2013) of the FR-S/BRZ.

While it is annoying, the upside is that it doesn't hurt anything.

I'm having the same chirping problem when it sits at idle. Took it in when it had less than 1k miles and of course it didn't do it when I took it. I'm also having the delayed transmission engagement issue when the truck is cold. WTF - 40k truck and having these issues.

Shouldn't fuel pump noise be heard more prominently towards the rear driver's side wheel well where the fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank?

I don't think it's the fuel pump. I would say it's the d4s high pressure fuel injector new in the 3rd gen Tacoma that is making the chirping noise. The dealer compared it to the Scion FR-S when I took it in 500 miles after I bought it. I have over 2k miles now and am going to argue for a replacement of that system. They told me that's just the way it is but I refuse to accept that.

It's always been my experience with belt chirps that the sound is usually caused by the tension pulley. Who knows, new vehicles shouldn't make these kind of noises. You pay too much money for them.

I don't have that noise (yet) at 5k. So it's not like they all have it and have to accept it. If they all had it, I would think a lot pf ppl would walk away after a test drive. And if it was 'the way it is' it would royally suck A$$!

Agreed, but idler pulley bearing noise has happened to me before, it came up just after the 3yr bumper to bumper warranty expired.
But I don't think it helped any that I got cough in a mass flooding event while traveling from AK thru MS. during a hurricane and drove thru some deep water. No other issues so i was cool about it :)
    Cheers!

It is the D4S's high pressure fuel pump in the FR-S and BRZ that makes the cricket noise. Reference the TSB's I linked in post #42.

A little over 1300 miles on mine and I noticed this sound tonight...:( Doesn't appear to be the exhaust support bracket bolt - that's all snug.

It's the tensioner pulley. When I first purchased my truck I could hear it with a screwdriver used as a stethoscope. Drove me fucking nuts. At roughly 11k miles now and it has silenced. I assume it was do to tight tolerances being brand new...

I also noticed the chirp goes away with the A/C turned off. It comes back with the A/C on and at the exact time that the compressor cycles. Drives me nuts when I roll down the window at a drive thru and the sound bounces off of the wall. :annoyed:

Took it into the dealer for the 5k mile checkup after my drive from South Carolina. Dealer is ordering a new High Pressure Fuel Pump......Changing it out on Friday. Now to figure out why my Head Unit decides that it wants to randomly reboot. FML.

Keep us updated if that fixes the chirping. I'm going to get mine looked at as soon as I can find the time to get it in there. And my head unit has decided to reboot a few times as well...

Took the truck to the dealer yesterday. They changed out the High Pressure fuel pump. Chirp sound is now gone. I'll post if it returns.

We just bought a 2016 Toyota Tacoma, we took it in a month ago for the chirping sound when it was at idle. They changed the belts saying that would do the trick. Two days after that the chirping started again. We took it back to the dealership and they found it was the fuel pump making the sound. They replaced our fuel pump with a new one and the chirping went away for about 2 weeks. As of yesterday it is back to chirping, louder then normal.
