The first video is obviously of the (driver's side) front differential to CV axle connection. Is this the dreaded roller bearing failure that's fixed by the East Coast Gear bronze bushing/sleeve? Sure sounds like it to me. The "clicking" noise makes me think the rollers are out of round.

The second video is of the driver'a side wheel bearing (I think) noise. Ignore the slight scraping sound (brakes on disc) and listen for the sound that's like a dry leaf being hit by a fan blade. Is that a ball bearing that's got a flat spot? I replaced this wheel bearing about 40k ago.

Yeah, I replaced the roller bearing with the sleeve from ECGS. I manufactured a tool to remove the old bearing, which I think I sent to someone from this group. Can’t remember. At any rate, I replaced the CVs, wheel hubs and replaced the roller bearing w/ the sleeve. I guess it’s hard to know what actually fixed it, but I’m thinking the sleeve was the key. It’s been a while since I did this and my memory is a bit rusty on the details. Hope this helps!

Hey Todd, I know this is an old post and hopefully you are still around. I have a 2006 Tacoma and my drivers side cv right by the diff makes the exact same sound when rotating the axel. Course there is about a 1/4 play in the cv as well right by the diff which I here is common. Would you know if this noise is normal or is this a failing needle bearing?

    Hey Sendwad,

Yeah, it’s been a while! I’m still rocking the ‘06 taco. It has about 215k now.

If memory serves me, I chased this damn noise all over the front drive train- wheel bearings, cv-axles, and the needle bearing. Ultimately I think it was the needle bearing that was making the noise. It’s not terribly difficult to change if you have the right tool (I made mine out of a bolt and some metal stock I had laying around (welded, so if you don’t have a little home-job welder then you’ll have to find one on the forum or buy it from ECGS. Good luck. I know it’s a royal pain in the arse to chase these mystery noises.

    Hey Todd,

First thanks so much for the replay, I'm a huge fan of this forum! Glad to hear you are still rockin the '06, I have the exact same year as well with 370k KM! I appreciate the feedback and help that's for sure.

I was trying to determine if this was a normal sound if they all make that sound, as i have no other symptoms of a bad needle bearing, no vibration growl and or a lifted front end. I just noticed it when I was rotating the tires and thought it was odd but it's been making that sound for 1000's of KM.

Since I didn't want to change it and replace it with the east coast bushing, but I don't want it to fail if this is definitely the sign of a failed needle bearing.
