My amazing woman asked for a Tacoma two months ago - cutely yelling "Tacomaaa!" at every pick-up truck we see (Tacoma or not) and we're finally getting it (hopefully by this Tuesday, 11/3).

What would you say to your pre-Tacoma-owning self, in preparation for selecting and purchasing your first?

I'd tell myself not to let every little thing from TW put me on edge about my truck.

Thanks RedWings - what things have put you on edge when you first joined? (Also, I feel like I made a mistake by not joining this forum as soon as she asked for the Tacoma...I didn't take it seriously enough because I didn't have the loan yet, but I could've joined here two months ago and would've been in "better" shape, yes?)

Nothing, they are great trucks. Every vehicle has little quirks, some people get worked up. But the proof is in the longevity and resale values, far more happy customers than not.

What about 2017? An urban chauffeur friend of mine did some research and suggested that 2017 was a lemon year. How true is this?

You can check out anytime but you can never leave. Not sure of your age if you get the lingo but welcome none the less.

If you're here enough (like researching any vehicle) you'll eventually feel like there are so many problems that it is a POS or you'll need X, Y, and Z to prevent issues. All this despite the fact that your truck has never actually exhibited any of the issues that you may be worried about. It's all about perception. For example: people think this truck shifts awful, but others say they've had no issues. Or that you'll need to regear because you put tires on that are .5" larger. Or that your truck can't handle its own cooling because it doesn't have an electric fan, despite the fact that you aren't going to be doing any hard core rock crawling in the 110° heat.

I quickly found myself thinking I needed new radiator/cab mount bushings. Glad I didn't get those because my issue was something minor that I had done. The more you're here, the more you'll see what I mean. Just remember, no one can fake your perception. If you like your truck and the way it drives, don't worry about the things that "may" be issues for other people.

Can't say I have any real complaints with my 2017. I'm not the first owner either.

I did indeed "Go West" (though I didn't live in a hotel) - and yeah, I'm getting that sense

True had a 2003 corolla that had 250K never did a thing to the car other than oil changes, belts, Filters and Brakes, I did have one coil pack go out at 100K and 1 motor mount but still had original radiator, fuel pump, brake cylinder, fuel filter, water pump etc....I think sometimes peeps create their own problems. Just my 2 cents.

Yep. Plus, it's also easy to rack up the upgrades you want to make because you saw them on someone else's truck here and they look awesome!
