Yes I can see this happening :)

I still can't find one to buy, however: I've got $25K for a 2015-2020 double cab 4WD...am I totally unrealistic?

    Very unrealistic.

Well, unless you are also very lucky. Or find one with very high miles and a few dents.

Unfortunately, the used car market in general is insane, let alone the used Tacoma market. A couple of months ago several people reported getting offered more than they paid by Carvana for their Tacomas that they'd already driven for a year. My 2017 was just over $32k back in April and that was before the used market shot up. You may be able to find a higher mileage or lower trim for $25k, but it'll probably be hard unless you aren't afraid to look older. 2015 is 2nd gen territory so basically anything from 2005-2015. 2016 and newer is 3rd gen territory.

I been known to be lucky, but TacomaWorld is new territory for me. I’m not stubborn so I will explore other trucks.

If you couldn’t have a Tacoma, would you go with foreign (Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Frontier) or domestic (Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger)?

I prefer American-made but will go with the best option for the price such that my ride will last many years.

Totally depends on how the vehicle will be used and if you are DIY capable or dependent on others for all maintenance/repairs.

If you want comfy and very light offroad use, but want 4wd for snow, etc. and occasional hauling of stuff, Ridgeline is a good call, but edgy on the price range

If you want more rugged, an older Nissan or Ranger. Neither will make the woman happy down in your price range.

Another option is to save more $ and wait.

You are the one that said

The other options are like giving her opals or jade when she asked for a diamond.

Ok, I'm out. Good luck with your shopping!

I was able to find mine with AutoTrader. Auto Tempest also searches several automotive websites for you. Then there's also CarGurus and Carvana. Although I imagine you're quite limited by your location. But at least you can set your price parameters.

Ahh I see - well we talked it over and she’ll be happy with a 4WD truck regardless - and reminds me that she knows the diamonds are coming

Enthusiast forums are echo chambers for the bad parts of a hobby. Think about it. If you had a problem with your truck, you'd want to go where people also have the trucks to see if there's anyone else with that same problem.

If the door on your truck has opened and closed correctly for 10 years, you probably aren't looking to find a group of people just so you can let them know that your door is still working fine.

But if you have a bad fuel pump or something, you're gonna want to yell about it.

Overwhelmingly, these are fantastic trucks, but you will read a lot of negative about them here, because that's what people want and need to talk about to keep them being great trucks.

Remember that the 2012-2015 has the 4.0 with the secondary air injection system, mine has been replaced once and is going back in for the newest recall to replace parts again. Other than the SAI issues, I’ve loved my Tacoma!
