I would guess that the loaded weight of that trailer is really close, if not over, the tow rate of your truck. Then add in people and gear in the truck, and you'll be much happier with a Tundra for that use.

    That's a little trailer. Here I'm thinking this thread's about a 24' tandem...

I tow this all the time:

My truck's over 6k lbs with all the armor and crap in it. We've been on dozens of trips for thousands of miles. No smoking. No trouble braking. No trouble accelerating. I can definitely feel it's there - it's 5000lbs of trailer that's wider and taller than the truck, so I leave more room and make liberal use of the skinny pedal. I get 10-12mpg. Still, temps stay normal and the truck does everything I need it to.

If your brakes were actually smoking and you weren't being hyperbolic, you should check your pads, rotors, and brake fluid. That's REALLY bad and there's either a serious issue with your setup or you have a serious technique problem. The setup may be your brake controller - someone earlier posted a video. Saying your knee turned it off is your own incompetence, don't blame the equipment for that.

Bigger trucks make it easier to drive recklessly with a trailer, but still, you need to be careful and take efforts to make sure your truck and trailer is set up right instead of just complaining that the Taco isn't enough for a little trailer like yours. I have full confidence I could tow your trailer coast to coast and back with not a single issue in a Taco.

Yeah, the brake controller is in a bad spot I think. Its right near where my right knee is and if my wife drives my truck my seat is slightly to far forward,... I think I flipped it completely off accidentally. Once I fiddled with it the breaking seemed actually fine. But this one hill by my house is super steep but short and my because of traffic I had to essentially come to a complete stop. It was one of those wtf moments. I pull over and see smoke coming from the front wheels and I was like "oh shit"

I hope some people read a lot more before buying a midsize truck as a tow vehicle.

    Some day.

Seriously though, folks need to research more before buying into a so called "lifestyle" vehicle. People expect way too much from a midsize truck on this forum. Especially in reference to towing. Toyota themselves claims towing is nearly last in the list of wants/needs on owner surveys they send out. If owners typically don't rate towing ability high on their list of needs, why should Toyota?

Agreed. Lifestyle truck is exactly how it’s marketed.

Tow pig it never will be.

Since the external transmission coolers are gone from the tow package towing must not be a priority for Toyota truck buyers.

It will be interesting to see what the 4th gen Tacoma and Tundra will feature when it comes to towing.

    At 60mph 20 yrds = .66 seconds.

    That is very, very quick.

My guess is that it took closer to 100yrds

Or Toyota thinks the transmission will handle it. If they thought the truck needed it, it would be on there. Warranty is a multi billion dollar industry.
They do things for a reason. Lol Use to be, if you bought a new F250, there will be a towing pigtail in the glove compartment for trailer brake install under the dash. They knew the buyer would tow something sooner or later. F150's did not. You had to buy aftermarket. A Ranger???? LMAO.

It's pretty common across all makes/models/even 18 wheelers. Things get sketchy when you start getting close to the max. It tows like shit, doesnt stop as well, accelerates like ass, and is uncomfortable as hell.

I dont think tacoma cant handle towing, I think people cant handle towing that close to the limit

Dont you guys ever see the oversized loads on the roads hauling heavy equipment? Those guys are doing half the speed limit, take up 2 lanes and have escorts in front and behind them. They aren't over their limit, yet they are towing extremely cautiously. Ever wonder why??
