About to place my order....a few questions (especially for the manual trans guys out there)

I'm about to place my order....i know, I know, it'll take a while but that's ok since I am not in a hurry and I want a double cab OR M/T truck which is hard to find in stock with the options I want.

My use will be mostly utilitarian (am in Chicago) around the house type stuff - home depot, etc. May pull a trailer with a couple of harleys and occasional trip to Rubicon, Moab, etc....but not the severe off roading as there are easier paths to take in those areas as well.

So....my first question is to the people out there with the M/T, when offroading how does it perform? If you are in 4Lo and first gear, is this the equivalent of crawl (with the auto)? I've read reviews of the Jeep Rubicon with M/T that when in low and first gear, it can practically crawl up anything just at idle. I am not talking about severe rock crawling but large hills and obstacles. How is the throttle control in 4LO and first gear? Jerky smooth etc? Does the throttle action change when going to 4High or 4Lo? Any other considerations to think about when off roading with the M/T?

Fuel Mileage - how's the mileage in real life. I see that many of the automatics are not getting mileage as advertised (and I know there are many variables) so was wondering if its the same with the M/T.

Options - I'll be ordering a fully optioned truck but I've read some posts about perhaps being able to order the JBL with the M/T off road. Any other option not obvious that I should consider?

Thanks and looking forward to join the club....

I have a dcsb trdor m/t on order. As far as I know you can get the premium package with it but as far as I know the premium audio is not available with the manual transmission. Good luck with your wait, I hope you have a month, or 3, to wait....

I don't have time at the moment to type a full response but I'll get back to you later today. For a short answer buy the manual. It will be great offroad. You can check out my fuelly link for real world mileage with 265/75 r16 duratracs. I would never trade the control gained by a manual for a gimick like crawl control.

Why would the transmission matter in respect to audio choices or vice versa? Doesn't seem to make any sense. Sounds like Toyota saying "because I said so" instead of there being any real reason. I could see it somewhat if picking shit on the lot or area but if you are ordering one and waiting for the build then YTF not?

I may be totally off base here but I believe it has to do with the navigation system. It seems that with most cars that still offer a manual you can't get the manual with navigation. There are exceptions but they are few.

The dealer I spoke to said they have three allocations for orders and they can tweak them to accommodate my needs and the wait will be 4 to 6 weeks. So not sure if they were blowing smoke to get me to buy from them but it did sound reasonable.

Same questions as before, audio and/or nav......what would tranny choice have to do with either of those other than them making you buy what they want to sell you vs. being able to buy what you want to buy? I know it doesn't stop you from having what you want, you just buy the stereo/nav you want later and get the rest of the truck as you want it but still.......

Preach it brother. That's what I was thinking. Unless it screws with their assembly line process flow. But still give the consumer what they want I say.

I test drove a manual with nav but no premium package that had the parking sensors and such.

Electronics. Everything is connected, the different systems don't operate independently of each other.

I hear ya, and don't doubt it necessarily but I don't see why the entertainment and functionality of the transpo need that much interconnectivity. I mean, I don't want my stereo to have anything to do with traction control or which transmission I have or what the motor is doing. Closest that makes any sense is the gray wire keeping you from watching dvds when not in park.

.......and of course, the world doesn't revolve around anything making sense anymore so.............

Ordered this same truck about two months ago and it's supposedly being built today. You can't get the JBL with the manual though. For the same money you can get a better custom sound upgrade anyway. Get the manual, who gives a shit about mpg, it's a truck not a prius. In my current tacoma, I can idle uphill at a crawl in 4lo 1st gear.

Absolutely, I'm right there with you, it is very stupid. I have zero proof that it does have to do with electronics but that's the impression I get, not just with the Tacoma, but, Honda is the same way except with the civic si.

I got the DCSB TRD/OR MT I use the 4L daily on the farm pulling trailers and driving thu the cows slowly (LOL) Get the MT. Reverse is a little fast in this 6 speed but its works. I can't speak for off roading it yet but have used the rear locker a few times already love it. On the mileage I get 16 to 20.

I've wheeled two manual Jeeps (CJ, TJ), an automatic Jeep (XJ), and my automatic Tacoma. I prefer manual, no contest.

Also, I wouldn't use a review of a Rubicon as any type of reference point. The manual Rubicon has an impressive crawl ratio of 73.14:1. The 2016 manual Tacoma's is 43.98:1.

TRD OD with 6MT comes with the same "premium audio" that all the TRDs do. The JBL package however cannot be had with the manual. To the OP's original question, the manual trucks have a decent crawl ratio, something in the 45:1 range IIRC (not going to look it up right now while on mobile). In 1st gear low range you let out the clutch and roll up small hills without any throttle input. Also, thanks to the really progressive throttle curve that Toyota loves to use for fuel economy reasons it, you get the added benefit of much more precise control of the throttle as you roll into or out of it. So no, not very jerky. Real world fuel economy I'm currently averaging 18.5 with a 50/50 mix and a economy killing 3 mile climb at the end of my drive home everyday.

    Some numbers...

    Rubi 6MT
    • 4.46:1 1st gear
    • 4:1 transfer case
    • 4.10 differential
    • 73.1:1 crawl ratio
    Taco 6MT
    • 3.98:1 1st gear
    • 2.57:1 transfer case
    • 4.30 differential
    • 43.98:1 crawl ratio

And also...as others have said, manual transmission plus JBL is not an option. I have explored that at length and it cannot be had, for now.

Thanks! Exact kind of feedback I was looking for: on throttle modulation in crawl mode. I imagine that with the auto the crawl control probably modifies the throttle input so I was hoping something similar for the manual especially that it has a shorter rear end gear and hence more torque.

Another question on building the truck - It looks like if I opt for the long bed, the m/t is not available. Although not a deal breaker, it would have been nice with the slightly longer bed. Is this the case for sure or is it a regional thing like the JBL radio?
