I had a similar problem with my '97 4Runner. It turned out to be a dirty mass airflow sensor. They are delicate so don't touch them. Buy a can of MAS cleaner and follow the directions. Worth a try and cheap.

BTW- If you are going to blow holes in your block fill the valve covers with 40 pounds of tannerite and shoot them with a 36-06. Take videos for us please.

Well... since I have been using the non-ethanol fuel, my truck has been running like the trusty Toyota it is!!!! It hasn't burped, coughed , or farted! I am considering running the ethanol enriched fuel, maybe 5gal. worth, just to confirm the fuel was indeed the culprit. And just in case anybody isn't aware of this, ethanol will actually absorb moisture out of the air, which in turn, contaminates the fuel tank itself. Knayrb, nothing gets by you, does it? LOL

hmm that is strange. Did you always fill up at the same station before you switched? I could understand shitty performance if you were mistakenly running E85 but not premium. It has the less ethanol than lower octanes.

Having the exact same problem with my 97 taco 3.4. Gonna have to find a non-ethanol station and give this a try. It's just weird because I fill up at the same station for the last 5 months and just now starting to do this... We shall see.

IT isn't the ethanol. Turns out, the waterpump had coolant weeping out of tattle-tail hole, which would drip onto the crank position sensor terminal. The corrosion was cleaned off, and problem went away. Apparently, the corrosion changed the resistance on the crank position sensor, which caused the problem on my truck. I hope this helps your plight!

Thanks! I'll have to check that out this weekend. What do you mean by tattle tail hole? Never heard of that part on the pump, haha. It is almost time for a timing/pump replace but I was hoping to wait till at least another year or till 180k miles.

Any chance you can take a photo or describe that part that was corroded? Little clipped wire right below the pump? I couldn't really find anything. Did you have to pull parts off? How did you find this problem?

    Thanks!

Wow. Interesting failure to say the least. I have seen some strange things before. I am honestly surprised that a code did not set, because most DTC diagnostics include sudden, erratic signals. Glad that you found the problem! I see it originally was happening back in 2010!

I personally did not find it. I have a Toyota mechanic that does work on the side. The timing belt was due to be changed, so I was going to have him change the water pump while, while he was there, along with the front crank seal. He is the one who told me what he found. That is the best answer, that I can give you, as I never looked at the corroded crank position sensor he described to me.

So I'm having loss of power issue also if going up steep hills in let's say 2nd gear I'll pin it to the floor and Pretty much nothing will happen besides the truck slowly reving down and eventually stalling. Also I'll sit on a slightly elevated hill release the clutch in first instead of crawling steadily like most manuel vehicles it slowly revs down and just about stalls before I press the clutch to prevent the stall I cleaned the maf tried the injector cleaner now I'm trying to figure out what to check next it's got 275/70s

You may want to check out the manifold air intake valve. Mine was doing exactly what you described, so I cleaned that valve area really good, and it purred like a kitten.

I had same problem........after changing fuel filter, having fuel system cleaned and new plugs . Still had problem with no faults....
I decided to clean MAF sensor and when I opened hood I noticed the lid on air filter box was open.
I replaced filter and closed lid and so far so good.
Not sure why Toyota did not catch it when I had them do fuel system clean.
and I believe when I had oil changed a few weeks before fuel system cleaning.
They opened and did not close it all the way. I noticed the problem the day after oil change
    600 miles from home.
