    Hi,

2005 Tacoma Ext Cab TRD Offroad 4x4 Manual 4.0 L

I am scratching my head with this one, my ebrake and ABS light are both on at the same time. I have checked the fluid levels which are high, so all good there. They have been on for a few months, even after changing the rear drum brakes. Could this have to do with the diff locker? Is there any diagnosis that a lay-man could perform? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

You need to use a scan tool and scan it for ABS codes.
If you get the codes, we can help you.

Do you know of a scan tool that can read ABS codes for a tacoma? Recently purchased a BlueDriver since ABS code reading was advertised but it does not pick them up for Tacomas.

    The ThinkDiag is nice.

If you want bi-directional functions it's hard to beat the Pro version. It would be worth the extra $30

@Dm93 has the Pro version. He's a tech and says it does a lot of stuff for a $100 scan tool.

There was only one when I bought it, it was just called a ThinkDiag.
The app is kind of anoying with notifications and such and can be buggy at times but when it works it can do alot for the price.

There's also the TopDon TopScan that is in the same class and price range.

I did a writeup on what to look for in scan tools and a summary of the ones I use but it hasn't drawn alot of interest.

Just use a jumper wire...it will then cause the abs light to blink in code, write down the number of blinks and then you can look up the ABS codes.

    He can if he wants.
But the scan tool is well worth the money.
If you ever have to bleed the ABS module, you'll want a bi-directional scan tool.

    Hey All,

Thank you for your reply's, I got my truck into a mechanic. Code that was read was a C0215.

The work that was done was replacing the wheel sensor and tone ring on the left rear wheel, so we have good resistance in that sensor and have power going to the wheel and back to the ABS module. But it is still reading as a code. Both the ABS and Ebrake light are still on. All the other wheels are reading fine.

Our thought is that the ABS module is shot, does that sound right?

The only thing left to do is scope the signal if you want to be 100% sure.
The tone ring is part of the wheel bearing. Are you sure your mechanic replaced the correct part?
I believe the bearings are side specific.

You can see scope captures in the link below.

    Hi All,

To update, it ended up being the ABS module, got one on ebay and swapped it out and the lights are off.

Update again, not quite done this journey, abs engages every time I brake (even on dry roads) I am going to check the wheel sensors again for debris. No warning lights present.

No check Engine or ABS light on?

Do you have a scan tool?

Update, had to replace my front left wheel bearing assembly. Turns out it was a mix of that, a broken sensor, and a bad ABS unit! All lights are off now and ABS works as it should.
