ABS issues on icy roads and tire size

This poll is an attempt to get some basic data about who is and who isn't having ABS issues. After some light searching it seems that it is a somewhat accepted idea that a larger tire size can cause ABS issues including over sensitive and early engagement of the ABS system.

2005-2014 Factory size tires:
215/70 R15
245/75 R16
265/70 R16
265/65 R17
255/45 R18

Please use these STOCK sizes to base your selection off of, anything larger is oversized.

I have oversized 265/75-16. ABS sucks as usual. Not sure about it being worse.

 

Have not had any problems. 265/70 R16

I feel it's a tire issue. I had issues with the stock tires. I switched to Goodyear Authority 265/70/17 M&S's and never had an issue in snow. This year, I put on studded Firestone Winterforce snow tires to, hopefully, take care of the problem on ice.

 

I've had problems with mine. I guarantee it has nothing to do with tires though.

Of course, the stock tires are horrible!

 

The point isn't that the stock tires are horrible, the point is that while running them the ABS acted up.

 

I don't care what tires you have. If you have three wheels on dry pavement and one wheel hits an icy patch while you're on the brake at a very slow speed, the ABS should not kill your braking power to all four wheels. And mine has in the past. Not always repeatable, but it's done it many times in the 8 years I've owned it.

 

I agree the system is sensitive. But, if you get tires that will grip, you can compensate for the sensitivity.

 

I should have had a 5th option, ah well.

 

You should pick stock - had issues..

 

Last winter OZ warned us all about this problem. Last winter I was all factory,, bran new. Dam near took my buddy's bumper out, not to mention my front end!!!! Left front on dirt, the other 3 on ice. Truck gave up on the ((traction tire), which would have stopped the truck easily, wasn't going 2-5 mph. Wouldn't stop! I missed him by inches! Should have listened to OZ better back then. Dam near got me killed today!!!

 

Yeah, I get where you are going with it. I'm slightly over stock, so "oversize" for me, with issues in slippery conditions at low speeds. I bought the truck used and haven't run stock size in slippery conditions, I put new Duratracs on the first fall before it snowed. I don't think the size much of a factor though, since larger tires will allow more circumferential difference in "slippage" before the system engages.

I should have some info to add... My whole city is a skating rink atm. (Calgary, Alberta). I am on 3 month old duratracs, 285/70r17. Done some minor wheeling in it to get access to ice climbing, so driving on frozen rivers, open crossings, frozen mud, packed snow, half frozen gravel, and fresh snow. Overall I would say that the abs in our truck has too much authority, ie it can kick in too quickly in my mind. I'll do a little testing after work in my back alley (packed snow), and front Street (skating rink) to see what I get. I'll maybe even break out the go pro (if I can find it) at 60fps and let everyone analyze.

Any specific stuff you guys want me to for and watch for? I'll also pull the abs fuse for a bit and see if I can do better than the system.
