    On stock tires had several times where the ABS actually made me speed up when I hit the brake and depressed the clutch (downhill). It got to the point that I was pulling my ABS fuse when there was a snow forecast.
    I switched to oversized LTX-MS2 tires and have not had a problem since.
    I had planned on doing the ABS kill switch mod but haven't needed to.

    Hey guys. I'm sorry I haven't posted a video yet, I haven't been able to find my go pro. I haven't used it in years an I moved recently. Things have a way of getting lost in the move. I'll see about borrowing one.

    On another note, some anecdotal evidence from my drive to work this morning. It's extremely icy here, since we got a load of snow, the cold for awhile, above freezing for a day, and now it's - 25C again. Makes for fun driving.
    At stop lights there tends to be dry patches in situations like this, where most cars drive, and sheer ice in between the tracks. I was able to get both my passenger side tires on dry pavement and both driver's side tires on the ice. I stomped on the brakes from 50km/h. ABS kicked in, and I stopped so fast my face nearly hit the windshield (exaggeration, but you get my drift).

    The reason for this is that our Tacomas have 3 stage ABS. Each front wheel can be controlled individually, and the rears together (3 "zones" hence, 3 stages). This means that my ABS only kicked in and released the brakes on the wheels that had locked. I'm unsure if the rear would have unlocked itself or not, with one spinning and one locked. My guess is that it would not act in this instance, why release both brakes when you have one of those wheels with traction?
    The point is that for you guys whose one tire hit ice and you "coasted straight through an intersection" because of it, there are 3 possibilities:
    1. There was a lot more ice than you thought
    2. Your ABS is malfunctioning and you need to go to a dealer.
    3. You're full of shit and just want something to complain about.

    From my time driving this truck on some tough winter roads, and my experience with many other ABS systems, I would conclude that ours works just fine when there is not a fault in the system. I also really don't see how tire size can affect it noticeably. Sure the wheel speed changes somewhat, but I think from the largest stock size to my size (285/70r17) is only about a 5% change in speed. Nowhere near enough to confuse the system.

    I drove to work today in blowing snow, very, VERY slick conditions- I must be dead already because of the notorious Tacoma ABS...

    How do you mean? What happened? If abs is kicking in all the time you are driving too fast for the conditions and trying to stop too fast. Only time mine activates is if I get caught unaware and follow too close. In normal driving no matter how slippery it should not kick in if you are driving properly.

    I waited next to a crater. I didn't see any meteors. Therefore, craters aren't caused by meteors.

    Or ...

    When I stop downhill on snow and ice I can't see how ABS hurts. So neither can you.

    Or ...

    When I stop on glare ice nothing helps. So ABS is good everywhere.

    There they are. The three big arguments that "prove" ABS is fine. :rolleyes:

    You guys seem to think that this is the only time I've tried driving on slippery roads. If you are driving for the conditions and your truck is working correctly then your abs should not kick in every time, it's that simple. One wheel slipping will not activate abs on all wheels, again dependent on correctly functioning systems. It is specifically designed not to.

    Robert: find the hill that you think is worse with abs. Go down it as usual, and then try with abs fuse pulled. If you are used to ice you should be able to do just as well as with. If you just stand on the brakes I guarantee you will lose control and and sideways.

    And like I said before, the primary purpose of ABS is not to stop you faster. It is to maintain steering in slippery conditions by keeping the wheel turning.

    That's all you got out of what he said to do? Wow. You must have failed reading comprehension in high school. All jokes aside, he said to pull the abs fuse and if you are used to driving in slippery conditions you'll be just fine.

    I have no idea how that works with ice though. Because in my experience of driving anything on ICE, with ABS or not, you have no control.

    1. You have TRD Offroad

    2. You have different system

    3. Yes your system can control individual Wheels because TRD offroad has custom system with extra connection allowing brake fluid to flow both ways at the same time.
    Hence your experience does not count ...

    4. Since you dont know you have different system you are full of S..t (thats my replay to your #3)

    What I learned after arguing forever on another thread is that ABS becomes a bad thing under only very specific circumstances.

    There may be others, but I feel that these circumstances ALL TOGETHER AT ONCE cause a significant problem when ABS kicks in. In this one particular SET of circumstances I feel that I would be better off without ABS.

    * I am an excellent driver, expert on snow, and paying attention
    * I am driving my 2013 Toyota Tacoma 4wd.
    * I absolutely need to stop in any way possible
    * Steering is not going to help
    * I am going slow about 7 mph
    * I am going downhill, the steeper the worse
    * The road is very slick with patches of snow over rough ice
    * There is some traction, very little, but it's not glare ice
    * I apply the brakes
    * ABS engages

    If you were to experience this exact set of circumstances with me, I'm sure you would join me in saying WHAT THE F!!!!! as we enjoy our merry way down the hill.

    This set of circumstances are not improbable. They happen often enough where I'm at in Pennsylvania.
