The attached report is 12+ yrs old, and contains data that is 20 yrs old. But gives solid evidence of the effect the right tires make in Winter Driving conditions. I came across it when debating switching from studded Winter tires to studless Winter tires in 2010. I thought some people in this thread might appreciate the data contained within. Personally, this is my fifth Winter running Blizzaks as my dedicated Winter tire on all my vehicles; I ran studded Winter tires for 8 Winters prior to that. I consider the investment in dedicated Winter and Summer tire sets "an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure." Just my opinion FWIW.

As the ABS system is only getting limited real time data, Basically only the wheel speed data. There is lots of fuzzy guesswork based on averages ( more so than fact actually ) involved in the ABS Fuzzy Logic Controller Programming.

    Read Here:
    http://www.ijser.org/researchpaper/fuzzy-logic-anti-lock-brake-system.pdf

    http://www.idosi.org/mejsr/mejsr20%2810%2914/19.pdf

The ABS system is set-up to operate optimally using the factory equipment at factory ride heights wheels tires etc ... on and on. Once any of that is changed it has to impact the functionality of the logic programming.

I am not inferring that modifying your truck is the cause 100% of what you guys are seeing. Just trying to inject some knowledge into the conversation.

My most memorable issues occurred on packed snow downhill in a subdivision under 15 mph. Not ice.
I was idling in gear downhill approaching a T intersection. Depressed clutch, depressed brake, sped up.
My hypothesis is that while in gear I was getting traction by the small snow wedges in front of the tires but that the ABS cycling was not allowing them to form. It happened several times with stock tires but hasn't with MS2s.

It happened. It was not a figment of my imagination.
I would assume others have issues in certain situations and they shouldn't be dismissed.
Ultimately, if someone is looking for permission to mod their truck on the Internet they probably shouldn't.
If someone is looking for information on modding they are in the right place.

Okay so when you put better tires on you had more traction? No way that's so weird!

But seriously... When you hit the brake in this instance did abs activate? To me it sounds like one of those specific situations where abs may not help to stop, but will help you maintain control of the Truck.

You don't take winter tires off every time it snow. You have them on for the winter when it is likely to snow, and you leave them. No one swaps them every time.

It's not that hard to stick tires in a corner of your garage, or hang them on a wall. And yah "huffing around mid tires" isn't how most people spend their life. But it's not going to become your life. If you're competent it might take you twenty minutes to change a set, plus a retorque in a couple days. Not that big a deal if you want to be safer on the roads.

And there are winter tires that are rated for mud. Not bogging, but they do just fine in it. They are mandatory on a lot of highways in the Canadian rockies, it's simply too dangerous without them.

And you talking about your brakes "failing" is bull. I've done a hell of a lot of winter driving. With all season tires, mud tires, winter tires, stuffed tires, and with tire chains on. I've been out if control before, when the lack of friction on a surface surprised me. Believe me, I know the feeling. But not once have I been in the ditch or hit another car or missed a corner because of it. I've pulled plenty if people out of ditches though. And every single time they were not driving for the conditions and their tires. If you have judged the roads correctly, then you should not have an issue. When abs kicks in it may seem to the uninitiated that brakes have "failed". The haven't. You simply only have that much traction. If you hit something in that instance, then you weren't driving according to the conditions, it's that simple.
Don't try to blame Toyota for you not being able to drive in ice and snow. It's difficult. No shame there. But just admit it.

Disclaimer: this whole post assume an abs system without a fault. If you believe that you have a genuine problem with a system not working correctly then go to a dealer immediately.

I haven't read a single word in this thread. I am just here to say that it is a good goddamn thing that the use of these images was performed by qualified and certified individuals, and that no one has to die. This time.

If you have a problem with your ABS you need to slow down more and use the best rubber to give yourself and advantage. That's all we are saying.

I've never said you don't have a problem or that Toyota shouldn't be working on it. Report your issues to the NHTSA so they go somewhere that might be able to exact some change. That's my advice.

I don't need to see the conditions to know that someone who ended up through an intersection or in a ditch was not driving appropriately. By definition they weren't, it's that simple.

If your brakes FAIL then why the hell are yo u still driving the Truck?

Incredible. All this arguing over that.

Here is another ABS thread has devolved into arguments over something that is ridiculously obvious.

We should all stick to simpler stuff. Like, "My wheels are loose, what should I do?"

Hey everyone, there's a new thread about someone's first oil change. I think we would all be better off heading over there.
