Anyone have a clue what might be the issue or what my next steps should be?

Double check your code scanner can scan the ABS system.

Wiring harness or ABS computer, if it's a 1st gen. Find a copy of the FSM for your truck and look for ABS diagnostic tests that involve metering pins for voltage and ground at the diagnostics port, and the ABS computer harness connector pins.
Also, you're in the 1st gen forum, is it a 1st gen? Good luck! Still occasionally troubleshooting mine for the same symptom

Yeah for 1st gens you need to do something with the pins and counting the flashing abs lights to get a code. It doesn’t show up on the normal scanner.

Make a jumper for pins 4 and 13 on the DLC. Turn ignition to on and the ABS light will spit you an ABS code

    List of codes and meanings

Example: you jump pins 4 and 13, turn ignition to on. ABS light does the following. Blinks 3 times, long pause, blinks 1 time, long pause, repeat. Indicates 31. Right front wheel speed sensor malfunction.

I am getting the 22 abs code. So, open or short circuit in 3 position solenoid in left front wheel.

I would start by disconnecting and cleaning the sensors at the wheels, and cleaning the electrical plugs for those sensors with contact cleaner.

You should really find yourself a digital copy of the FSM (just google search for 1st gen Tacoma FSM- should find it easily). 22 => DI-553:

After reading that a little further- it looks to be telling you to replace the module in the engine bay :( that one might be hard to come by, and if you do find one, replacing it is gonna suck. To bleed the air outta the lines you need something to modulate the brakes as if the abs was activated. I am not sure how to do that as a DIY.

Kind of hoping it’s truly a shorted wire that I can replace. Don’t mind running new wires. If it’s an entire abs module that will be a big no go for me.

I wouldn't "run new wires"... The system would be too sensitive for something other than what's supposed to be there.
