Yes Workman is fully aware of this, and sometimes he wishes he would have just got the SR5 option on his 06 and saved the rest for ARB upgrades. Luckily, Workman loves his factory locker and has yet to break a 3rd member.

Next time Workman wont be lured in by TRD stickers.

The other thing I found dangerous about the ABS/VSC/TRAC in winter is , waiting to pull out from a sidestreet onto a busier, main street, get a break in traffic, pull out, hit the gas and get a little wheelspin and all of a sudden...... no power, no movement and traffic is bearing down on you,and.... Toyota-Not Moving Forward ! even a little unintended accelleration at this point would be welcome !
To those of you who may reply with "slow down", or " Learn to drive in the snow " my reply to you is ... Try actually driving in snow and ice on a regular basis and then we'll talk. I'm never putting those fuses back in.

I grew up in snow, driving all sorts of different vehicles. I don't live in it now, but we've been through plenty of it and my 2009 is probably the most capable of anything I've owned, and ABS and VSC hasn't gotten in the way at all. I haven't done much off-roading in mine, and I have had a few situations where the brakes took longer than expected to stop, but it was REALLY slick in those spots. I doubt a non-ABS vehicle would have stopped much better. It's actually pretty rare that VSC kicks in, unless I'm hot-dogging it around a corner (which the truck promptly ends).

The only other vehicle that I had that was probably near as good as the Taco was my Celica All-Trac. It, unfortunately, had a problem of selective ABS. Sometimes, when you'd least expect it, you'd get no ABS. No fun to expect it and not get it.

Just need to learn the threshold to where the ABS kicks in. Then, try to stay out of it. I only once had the ABS kick in on dry pavement, and I was glad I had it!

Im pretty sure ABS is not meant to be disabled. I have heavier winters than half of you, and ive owned my truck for five years and havent nearly experienced any of the "sliding" and "dangerous" situations most of you have had. Learn how to drive your truck, don't assume shutting ABS off is going to help you, sounds stupid imo but what do I know eh;)?

ABS sucks in snow , shutting it down gets you back to the good old days of knowing how to drive and brake in snow without assistance .

How can that be a problem ?

Have you ever made a steep decent off road on a ice covered trail in the mountains you have locally?

throw in a couple loose rocks and wet leaves?

To me, VSC is just "The Man" taking another piece of control out of an individuals hands.

One the Tacoma, it plain under performs. On a nicer vehicle with nicer equipment, it performs better. In that respect, it is the old saying, " you get what you pay for"

I say, give me better ABS, or is stays un-enableable at my discretion.

If you do it and don't like the light being on, put some tape over it. Lol.

Besides, I much prefer having full control of my vehicle. I drive it every day. Encounter many circumstances, and being able to know how my vehicle is going to respond, makes me able to be a safer, smarter driver.

Sounds like you don't know very much. I have been in a coouple situations just like the OP, And my ass was sore from the major pucker it made me do. Would of been much better off if I could pump my brakes myself.

Wow... After I removed fuse #2 (ABS 30amp), experience clearly shows that the stopping distance is cut in half if not more!

When I brake, it stops right here.

I'm gonna live with two warning lights (ABS and BRAKE on) on the dash because it just STOPS ! I feels much more safety in this truck now.

    Thank you for the tip!

Well after reading this thread i didnt know what the hell the problem was that everyone described. This was until i tried to stop at a stop sign last night. The part that startled me the most i guess is that i was almost at a complete stop, like just about to get the "nudge" that you get when you know you have come to a complete stop, and the abs kicks in and roles me into the intersection. luckily it was not a busy intersection but still could have been bad.

just thought i add some fuel to the abs hate fire :p

Don't you think it is clear that I am aware of that? Did you not see the section in my post, that you quoted, where I talked again about ABS? o_O

Did you not see other people bring up VSC? If so why not comment on them? Lol.

It is all good though man. I know what this thread is all about. Title says it loud and clear. :)

Nicer??? Sounds like you need to sell your Tacoma and get your better ford/chevy/gmc? Then GTFO.

My Tacoma is a damn fine truck in my opinion.

I'll jump in here with this:

My tacoma has been in tons of weather conditions including nasty ice, snow, slush and deep snow. Honestly, the ABS has never been a problem for me. The only time the ABS ever kicked on I expected it. That's from slamming on the brakes in ice. If I slow down and come up to stop signs or downhill to turns at a safe slow speed I don't have an issue.

I can't believe some of you would disable the ABS while driving on road. One of the biggest selling points of the Tacoma is safety. Look at any pickup review, the toyota wins hands down in stopping distance usually beating the competition (frontier, ranger, colorado, dakota) by 20-30%.

If you disable it, I hope you are always the only person in it.

Well I said before, I had it happen to me just as the OP did. Creeping to a stop, and all of a sudden ABS kicks in, and when I would of been stopped, I moved atleast another 5 feet. Scary when you can't control your truck.

I'm not saying ABS is a bad thing in all vehicles, but when the majority of the group says, they suck. Well you might tend to go with the majority.

And I see your 30 years old, so I''m sure you have driven or atleast have been in a vehicle that has not had ABS. And I'm sure you where fine. I have driven alot of vehicles with out ABS, in snow and ice, and I pumped my brakes, and did just fine with out them.

There are tons of vehicles stil on the road today that do not have ABS. So to say that it is unsafe to drive is kind of crazy to me. I have not and probably will not disable my ABS, but I could see why someone would want too, and I don't think its any less safe for them to be doing so.

OMG. I had that same exact Plymouth Valiant. We drove it until the floor board rotted through and we were feet out like Fred Flintstone. Funny thing.

W/o having read through all these posts, to make matters worse, when VSC kicks in, the folks behind us don't know we're slowing down. The brake lights do not come on so they're wondering why or that we are slowing down. Thats super dangerous.

I don't want to argue just for the sake of arguing. "Well you might tend to go with the majority." but that's one of the silliest things I've ever read.

There's no doubt that ABS is a huge safety feature and cars stop significantly shorter with it than without it on pavement. Sure, there are lots of cars on the road without ABS. I ask you to compare the Tacoma's without ABS and the ones with you'll see the newer ones are much heavier than the older ones, pretty much the same story for all vehicles. Not to mention ABS still allows you to steer to avoid an obstacle.

I have driven plenty of vehicles without ABS and luckily I never had an issue. I think that's more to not needing it tho than needing it but still stopping fine.

My point about hoping you are the only one in the vehicle is because if you are in a serious wreck you can damn well bet the insurance company is going to find that you disabled your ABS. Then I would assume they would promptly drop most, if not all, of your coverage. I would hate to have that happen to someone riding with me when they didn't know what they were getting themselves into, especially a child. Also, if a guy drills me and I find out he disabled his ABS, sorry but I'm probably going to make life difficult for you. This is the same argument as tinting your tail lights, just stupid to do.

When I totaled my car they looked that thing over with a fine tooth comb. They found several mods I had done, luckily none of them could be tied to the safety of the vehicle.
