ABS on this truck is dangerous...

    I see your points, but stopping distance is measured on dry pavement. We are talking about snow and ice in this thread. And in the snow and ice, these ABS set ups faill IMO. I agree with the insurance side of it, thats probably why I would not disable mine. But I sure the hell am aware of how it may act in snow and ice.

    With that said, I have driven in snow and ice, where someone with less experience may have wished they had ABS. And because of my experience in snow and ice, I was able to bring the vehicle I was driving under control. No ABS needed.

    And when you made that comment about someone else in the truck, it sounded as if you where saying it was dangerous to do so, not about insurance. That was where I thought you where wrong.

    And not arguing, just a friendly discussion on TW! :D

    If it was that slick, with locked up wheels you probably would have slid at least another 5 feet.

    I've driven a lot of non-ABS cars, and I rarely get into the ABS on the truck if I'm driving for the conditions.

    I have noticed, on basically glare ice, the truck can take a lot of room to stop. But, I can't say that it wouldn't have taken that much or more without ABS. That same glare ice I've been on with non-ABS vehicles, and the lightest tough of the brakes would lock them up. You're not stopping either way.

    Wasn't that slick. I was on slushy snow on pavement. I was just about to stop when ABS thought it was a good idea to kick in, I would have stopped just fine.

    Clearly you don't understand what the word "Nicer" represents.

    I love my Tacoma as well. Doesn't mean that Toyota could have spent a little more time to upgrade certain components....

    I don't know, something like maybe rear disk brakes versus the drums we have....:facepalm: My '91 Isuzu was 4x4 and had 4 wheel disk. What's up with that, that we have drums????

    There is different theories why trucks still use Drum brakes. But as long as properly maintained, there is nothing wrong with drum brakes. They work as they should on the rear end of a truck. Its funny to me that people think drum brakes are somehow "out of date".

    Those kind of conditions aren't a problem with ABS.

    If you where in the mountain area or in an area where temperatures can change very quickly with roads that have snow, hard-packed snow and ice (three togheter), you'll truly understand the limit of the ABS system. I don't drive fast and ABS still kicks-in at stop signs, even at 5mph.

    By shutting ABS off, the stopping distance is much more shorter on snowy-hard-packed-snow-patchs-of-ice. We don't see pavements 5 months/year. I tried many times last week when I disabled ABS and it works. Did you? No? Try it, you'll see. Just try it.

    Just curious, and even though the FJ has the same ABS system we do, why do they have 4 wheel disk, and not us? Factory weight of the 4x4 Access cab is 4045 Lbs. Pretty dang heavy.

    Factory weight of the 4x4 FJ is 4332 lbs (maunal). Heavier......

    Had my first experience with the ABS yesterday. Was approaching a green light when it changed at the last minute. With so many red light camera's in the area I tend to stop if possible. My wife gives me crap about this all the time. :rolleyes: But I felt I would stop in time. Well, I sorta did. The ABS imo kicked in and I wound up about half a truck length passed the stop line. I feel if it hadn't been for the ABS I would have stopped in time. It was dry conditions btw. If I had known I would have went as far as I did I wouldn't have bothered trying to stop. Just thought I'd share.

    Excuse me for not being clear. I said it changed, I didn't say it changed directly to red. Yes It changed to yellow and by the time I stopped it was red. It was one of those split decisions, stop or go on through. I've known people to get ticketed around here for going through when they claim they couldn't stop in time. So I usually try to stop, at least in Gwinnett county, since they are known for having the red light camera's.

    Anyway, the point was that I didn't like the feeling that the ABS dictated how I stopped. I felt like I could have stopped in a shorter distance than it allowed. It didn't feel like it was close to the tires breaking loose.
