The breather needs to be removed from the axle housing and ya gotta try to blow some air through it to see if its clogged or not. It doesn't have anything to do with the cap spinning.

Are you doing this work, or are you having a shop do this? If you had a leaky passenger side seal, you gotta do both sides. Changing the diff oil should have been part of that process.

Get after the fluids. I just did engine oil, ATF (2nd of 3 drain and fills), transfer case, front diff, and power steering fluid this past weekend. I would have done the rear diff, but I completely rebuilt the rear end last year, so it has less then 10k on the fluid.

yes it does because if it doesn’t spin then it’s definitely plugged or stuck.
if you try to remove it “as suggested” take caution I’ve seen many get broken off in the axle tube due to corrosion.

It’s not necessary to do both sides. If one side is leaking. Only replace them if they are leaking no need to be replacing parts just willy-nilly for no reason.
Just because the axle seal was replaced does not mean they changed the differential fluid. At best They may have topped it off.
I’ve seen Toyota axle seals go bad on one side and the other last another 100,000 or more miles.
So if it’s leaking then replace it.

Checking to see if the cap spins is not a complete check to find out if the breather is clogged. It is irresponsible to suggest that. However, being cautious while removing the breather is a good point.

To go through all the work to replace one side, and not the other is just foolish. You're already there, you have to bleed the brakes regardless, might as well spend the extra $16 on the other seal and be done with it.

Just changing one side, and just topping off the diff fluid, are simply minimal effort, and not doing the whole job.

The breather can become clogged anytime. So how often should we remove them to attach air to or put our lips on them?
They become stuck due to the outside environment the inside has gear oil the normal position of the breather is closed so they become stuck closed
I’ve never had one that I could not blow some air through after you were able to get it to spin.
Telling someone to change both sides, when only one side needs changed is irresponsible at best. They run the risk of damaging their brake lines or something else especially if somebody’s breather is already stuck shut due to corrosion on a 20 some year old truck.
I never Said that I would just top off the fluids and call it a day I was saying that’s probably what the other shop did.
While you’re at it, you might as well replace the pinion seal too. It’s just as susceptible as the axle seals. no sense in doing a half job you’re already there smh ‍♂️
