I am wondering if my ABS is working the way its supposed to. When I brake on a slippery surface and the ABS kicks in it makes a grinding type of noise. Is this normal?

    Yes, it is normal.

It isn't really "grinding". What you hear is the solenoids cycling the pressure to the brakes at a very high speed. This achieves the highest braking pressure without a wheel lockup so that you can steer the vehicle around an obstruction rather than hit it. ( Note: a locked front wheel will not steer ).
