They wanted a $5 fee to list, then my ad wouldn't show up. Back when it was new I didn't pay any fees. I had to contact them multiple times letting them know my ad wasn't showing up. That's just my experience with them. YMMV

Interesting, I’ve posted stuff for sale as recently as last fall without ever providing financial information, but I don’t post anything over a few hundred dollars typically.

    Yes, I think there is a threshold. I posted a 2001 Land Rover D2 for 18k.

He was referring to a pre-95 pickup with the 3vz. Apparently they were made in Japan.

Ah — I missed that part! Yes, indeed pre-Tacoma pickups were assembled in Japan and in the US. Our family’s second Toyota Pickup, a 1981, was Japan-built. In the 30+ years my dad and then I owned it I don’t think it ever went back to the dealer for anything.

One of the identifiers for Japan-built is a bed with the tie down hooks and tailgates with side latches. US-built trucks, IIRC, had smooth bed sides and a tailgate center latch.

Yes, but the PICKUP was specifically mentioned -- apologies if I wasn't being clear about that. That's what Toyota called the US-market Hilux back then. "Pickup" was used as a specific, not generic, term. Toyota stopped using the Hilux model name in the US around 1974, IIRC.

Same here. I've never paid any fee when selling on OfferUp. You do have to pay to "promote" your post though.

Dude, when I was trying to buy one on OfferUp about 5-6 years ago there was a guy selling one in Fresno (4 1/2 hours away) we agreed on price and what time I was going to pick it up the night before (10 Am Sunday) I left my house at 5am. Dude wouldn’t reply to my messages in the morning until I was an hour away. He said we never agreed to anything even though I had all the messages on the app. And sold it to someone else. I reported it to OfferUp and gave him a one star. Somehow he retaliated and gave me a one star rating. How was I in the wrong and received a one star rating when I did everything right?

When I started using OfferUp about 9-10 years ago it was super legit because it forced you to make an account with your Facebook account. Craigslist was a cess-pool of scams and flakes. Now it's almost the exact opposite. CL is like the kind of app that people use that don't have social media and are professional enough to use email. Take that with a grain of salt as it's a little exaggerated.

That said, I don't mind OfferUp / CL / FB Marketplace etc. because I always make sure I know exactly what I'm buying to the point where I know enough about it that there's almost no chance of me overlooking something bad. I never would travel 4 hours if I didn't have a phone number on any sales app / FB marketplace. Too many flaky people out there.

Limited for 5500? I wonder if there's something wrong with it, aside from the transmission of course

I think some of the later pre-Taco Pickups were built at the NUMMI plant. All the 4Runners were built in Japan AFAIK.

Yep -- apologies for my confusion; I was reading the thread too fast. See our later discussion downthread on the subject.

before buying my 95, I had been looking for over 2 years for the right one. I found mine on craigslist for 12.5 which was pretty nuts. eventually I saw the add again and it was down to 9.8 which is when I reached out to the owner. It had a misfire so i was on the fence until the owner let me do a compression test and it checked off. 320k miles. 3.4 Manual 4x4 with the sunroof and a near perfect interior, threw some ngk wires at it and she was back on the road. 7k was a good deal for me out in idaho, but the fact the owner was asking 12 in the first place was crazy especially with it not running. a bit of back story; the truck went from the original owner (he clearly took pride of ownership) to the daughter once he passed. the daughter sold it to the man i bought it from after it sat for around 4 years on her property and he finally decided to sell it after owning it less than a year because his son didnt want to learn to drive stick, and they didn't want to throw money at it.

You also wrote that they're better than any American built one without posting an argument for it. If you think your 93 Pickup is better than a 1st gen Tacoma, then we definitely shouldn't take your word for it.
