Good news. My mechanic said he sees this issue all the time, other Toyota models too. I attempted to get some financial assistance by writing to Toyota Brand Engagement...they wanted nothing to do with it.

The few folks I've found including the dealer all require that the compressor be replaced, nobody wants to touch just replacing the sensor. It's going to have to wait as I just don't the funds to drop on this, maybe next Spring.

Just find it hard to believe with so many people having this problem that there isn't a recall.Hell even the guy at the dealer suggested I wait just in case there is a recall,I won't be holding my breath.Wish I had never traded in my '04.

Another reason to buy Toyota Extended warranty, they just do not build them as well as they used to.

something very similar happened to me about 3 weeks ago. i have a 2019 4x4 offriad, with 96k miles.

i took it to the dealer on 25JULY. basically you press the ac button, the green light comes on, the blower blows only hot air, and then the ac light turns off within 30 seconds. the system malfunctioned when driving on the interstate between Wichita KS and OKC in the middle of July. when I finally got it to the dealer - fowler toyota in norman OK, they were able to get me in a loaner, and I have been in the loaner ever since. my obd scanner does not show any codes, it is an innova obd 5310 - nothing fancy.

at first the dealer said it was just the ac clutch & compressor. so, I approved the repair, quoted at 1700$. "Price ac compressor with clutch, clutch spacers and 18 oz 1234yf".

so far, they have supposedly gone thru two new a/c clutches. after replacing the first clutch, they said there was an electrical short in my system that caused the first new clutch to fail and that would require more investigation. then they said that they could not find the short, so they just figured that the first clutch was defective. so, after keeping the truck for a couple more days, they came back and said that something else was going on and now the second clutch had failed. they said they were not quite sure what the issue was, and hadn't seen anything like it, but they had 3 techs working on it. they said they would have to reach out to other toyota dealers in their network and possibly toyota engineering to see if they could get a handle on the issue.

finally, this morning, after 18 days, they called and said that after further investigation, the original compressor had a catastrophic failure... "it grenaded itself" and now supposedly there are metal fragments and debris inside of the hoses & lines that attach to the compressor. they said this was an unprecedented failure and they'd never seen anything like it in their shop. it all sounds super fishy to me. i am a pilot and and a software engineer, i know a few things about jet and combustion engines, but ac has always eluded me.

in any case... they now say that they also need to replace the condenser and all of the supporting lines and hoses... so the total repair for the ac is up to about 3800$. i did ask them to save all the parts and provide technician notes for my own records, review & inspection, and possible future issues.
