i have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma prerunner. Ac has been blowing hot. Freon is topped, the magnetic clutch relay has been replaced. I took to a shop. They ran on machines and they can't figure out. The guy said the ac clutch turns on then after a few seconds, it loses power and that causes where the compressor won't turn on. He doesn't know if compressor is the issue. I need some advice. One guy that specializes in this stuff wants $90 per hour just to diagnose. Toyota wants $115 to diagnose but that will go towards repair cost if done within 30 days.

Check that the high pressure switch isn't stuck on. Someone with the wiring manual will need to confirm the voltage on it when closed. I think there might be a temp switch too, but would probably be harder to get to. That's assuming your refrigerant amount is correct. Too much or too little can cause the compressor to click off or cycle.

Take it to an A/C Shop. It could be a lot of things.

How was the refridgerant topped off?
Those home charging kits are from Satan and do more damage than good.

It sounds like it is low on refridgerant and dropping out the low pressure switch.

I wold say it's going out on either high or low pressure as said above. If it's turning on then off I would say the switches are working and it is actually going high or low. If you "topped off" the unit you may have put to much in causing the unit to go out on pressure. See the links below for symptom and trouble area and the correct way to put freon in the system.
