Why the hell are you asking the internet and not the dealer you bought it from? For what I paid for my 2018 OR, I call the service folks and get it handled. I'd never think to ask strangers for common sense advice on a brand new truck. My 1995? Sure, I'll ask away since the warranty is long gone. I'm all about questioning the functionality if you're new to the vehicle, but for a brand new truck that's malfunctioning there's only 1 place it needs to go.

I posted to notify others of the condition and the remediation.

When I asked about the TSB, they stated that there is a known problem between the A/C radiator temp and the compressor temp causing a shut down the A/C when at low rpm. They are installing a secondary electric cooling fan to "fix" the problem.

I will include pics and a copy of the repair order.

I noticed a similar issue when in Palm Springs last summer. I totally forgot about it and obviously didn't mention it at my last service. I have 32,000 miles and won't make it to summer temps again before being out of 36,000 warranty. Suggestions as to how to get this tsb done since it can't be replicated in winter?

Got the truck back after two days. They installed an auxiliary fan in front of the radiator and the accompanying relay box on the driver's side. Invoice is included. Cant really testIMG_9232.jpg IMG_9238.jpg IMG_9243.jpg it as it is 45 degrees outside.

Here is page 2 (or maybe 3) of the TSB.
Note it says that it may not be possible to duplicate below 100F. If they can't duplicate, and the temp is below 100F, and the customer report matches the non-conformance, then do the TSB.

So, theoretically... Tell your dealer that the last time it was really hot out and it was like 100F, and you were stopped in traffic idling, the A/C system shut off... And they should do it. Even if they won't fix it, report it now before 36k.

Ok, after starting this thread back in May of this year, I’m FINALLY getting the TSB 0063-18 done on my truck. I just dropped it off at the dealership about an hour ago. The parts came in a couple weeks ago and I’m just now getting around to leaving my truck with the dealer. I had to fight a little with them about giving me a rental car and I succeeded. I hope to get the truck back late tomorrow.

Picked up my truck tonight after they performed the tsb 0063-18. It took them 3 days! It will probably be a while before it’s warm enough to test though. I included a pic of the new fan they installed and the work order.

I just had the TSB performed on Tuesday. I haven't had a chance to play with it much. I will try to figure out when the fan runs and when it doesn't and what triggers it to run.

I just had it done as well. Looking forward to seeing when that fan comes on.

Seems like rather than add a secondary fan it should be set up so that the fan clutch remains engaged when either the engine temp or the AC temp requires it. Since the AC is on with defrost it should be tied to AC climate temp rather than just whether the AC is on. If the cpu both monitors the AC and controls the fan clutch then it might be just a software fix. Might not be the case and who knows if they'd fix it that way even if they could but an extra fan just seems like a brute force approach.

I’m gonna guess the ecu monitors the outside air temp, ac temp , and engine speed, and then decides when the aux fan will come on

Um no, I live in Phoenix AZ and today it was 113. I'm not a princess, I just don't like to sweat my ass off when all the other vehicles I own perform quite well in the same environment which include my wife's 2014 Camry and my "spare car" a 2003 1.8T Audi A4.

Now that you've had another summer under your belt, how has the repair been? Did it help/fix the issue?

This is impossible in our trucks. The fan clutch purely hydromechanical. It uses the temperature of the outgoing air from the condenser and rad hitting the actual device itself. Super reliable and simple but at low idle speeds, the fan doesnt turn fast enoug even fully engaged.

Many times after leaving stop lights, i hear my clutch fan roar for a few seconds, but toyota is probabaly super conservative with the tuning of device for mpg reasons .Also i would think this issue is more persistent with automatic trucks since being in drive puts a slight load on the engine when stopped, lowering the idle a tad. The sticks are either driving or fully free in neutral.

amazing, thousands of dollars of AC upgrades/labor so the Air conditioning works better, a free loaner car for the 3 days without the truck, and a No charge for all those services yet theres still room to bitch about not having the truck in order for them to do the work so a customer can be satisfied with buying a Tacoma, you should be thankfull they even addressed the issue and hopefully resolved it im sure you wouldn't be getting that kind of service anywhere else

I find the A/C to be pretty good in my Taco, and it frequently gets up into the 100s/110s in summer here. For best results, use recirc, and also keep the fan speed on the lower settings once the truck has cooled down a bit. When you run the fan at higher speeds, the compressor struggles to keep the evaporator cold when the truck is idling. At fan speed 1 or 2, my compressor will actually cycle on and off at idle (vent temps upper 30s), even when temps outside are mid 100s. On fan speed 3 or 4, vent temps will get down to the upper 30s when driving, but rise to mid 50s at idle.

I generally use the higher fan speeds for a few minutes when I first jump in the truck to take the edge off the heat, then I turn it down to 1 or 2, which IMO, keeps the truck colder on average than using 3 or 4 all the time, because the vent temps are actually staying colder.
