Hit it with one of those cans from Autozone and it worked for a solid two years after that, using the A/C every day until I sold it. I won't admit that I have any idea how the A/C system works but it fixed whatever the issue was.

If you have lost some of the refrigerant but not all of it, a re-charge can will work until it leaks out again. This depends entirely on how fast the leak is.
The reason is because if the system is completely discharged, a vacuum needs to be pulled on it, which the "A/C pro" can cannot do.

As I'm sure you've heard before, all A/C systems will leak a little bit over time. Some systems leak less than others based on quality of the seals.
