having to replace a line due to it rubbing on my aftermarket bumper. 70 for the line, not bad. But Toyota wants 748 bucks to recharge the system with the “new style” refrigerant...... wtf. Anyone have to do an AC service and not pay that? I know this 3rd gen is “new” but damn...

If it has the new R1234YF freon, the stuff is like 10 times the price of R134A. It's crazy, but honda started using it in 2016....

Ive done my own on previous vehicles. Buy a good metal ac tool and get the $15 dollar coolant. Super easy

No, it's not. Don't put R134a in your R1234yf system, that would be a bad mistake. Check to see if you can find the new refrigerant and DIY if you're handy, but don't mix the refrigerant types - you'll be out a lot more than the AC recharge fee if you do.

The coolant is like $30-35 per pound. I know because I put a drill bit through my condenser. Luckily I know someone that teaches auto ac at a community college and did it for me for free. It just cost me parts.

Don’t cross contaminate your system. Look at the decal on the inside of your hood. It will tell you what kind of refrigerant is required. You can really screw up a new system by putting the wrong refrigerant in and also overcharging the system. Many component parts from o rings to the compressor could fail if not properly charged.

It was awhile ago but when I got my MACS card they mentioned 1234yf isn’t user serviceable or compatible.

Only if you splash a little seafoam and hydrochloric acid in there.

You may also want to contact your local Auto Parts Store and see if they have a AC Clinic scheduled for your area where installers been in vehicles for diagnostics. Possibly they will evaluate your vehicle and recharge it for “free” as part of the Clinic.

I found that most dealerships in our area had it available. I just called around until I found the cheapest price since the fittings are universal, any dealer can fill her up.

Bought my '19 new. I leave my a/c on almost all the time and leave the truck running if I'm parked so I'm not necessarily an economical driver and my coolant may well be out. Just this morning it was blowing cold air and within ten minutes it was definitely not. I'm pretty certain I just need more coolant. I changed the battery the other day. Not sure if that'd have anything to do with it but that's as far as my mechanical confidence goes. Any advice for the most cost efficient way to handle this without doing anything I'll regret in the future?

Try driving it. This will verify the Freon is low and your thermal pressure switch isn’t bad. Of it gets cold driving, you need a recovery, vacuum and recharge. Don’t go to the dealer!! Go to a body shop and bring them a case of 805. They will probably do it for that.
