I understand it’s not going into over drive when put in 4 but it shifts so much cleaner it’s hard to believe. I’ve wanted to drive more in 4 recently but not sure if it’s more wear and tear.
Were the 4.0 4Runners this way too or a Tacoma thing?

    It’s all relative.
More RPM means more wear and tear.
But in the end, it’s not a huge deal.

    What ever floats your boat.
I run 4th towing. And when in town. Mostly to help the gear shifting. (And help me obey the speed limit)

True. Is it bad to knock shifter between d and 4 when driving?

No it's fine. I go between 4th and D a lot too because of my 33 inch e-rated tires and I'm driving in the mountains a lot. I don't like the engine rpms at 1,600 driving at 60.. so I drop it down into 4th and that gets the rpms back up above 2k

Have you checked transmission fluid level lately? Stock tires?

Totally understand that bro makes me feel better to do it. Trans fluid should be good at 175k now last done at 130k. Will do another drain and fill at 190k

Any time you're driving at a steady speed under 45-50 mph it's better to lock out overdrive util you're going to be driving 50+. Lower rpm's don't always mean better MPG's. Running in OD at lower speeds is also a lot harder on the engine.

I know what you mean about the trans feels better in 4th.Ive drove mine {2012,4.0 4wd double cab}in 4th in town since the day I got it.I also like the "firmer" shifts. Just changed trans fluid, and filter for the second time at 118,000 miles;fluid was nice and red, clean,so guess it can't be hurting it to bad.

I roll in 4th around town too.
The 2"-3" lowering kit makes the transition to OD on the FWY much easier.
I don't like running an engine below 2K, but mine is does well w/less drag!
I will try to do a Stockton to Sacramento and back for some MPG.

I go skiing at 8K. I go back and forth to OD keeping RPM between 2K-2.5K.
Since being more aggressive on downhills, I have improved mpg and am faster! lol
It does mean actively driving, not cruising and letting the AT do everything.

for almost 300k miles, I use 4 when under 45 most of the time as OD is just lugging to much and those vibes are just to distracting. :nuclear:

i was running 4g in town until i noticed it robbed fuel...you saying it doesnt or you mean the bad for engine lugging outweighs the worse fuel in 4g?

    youre not kidding
i had for 7.5 years the 4runner 4.0 with 4 speed, and liked it

now a 2015 taco 4.0 5 speed and on backroads to work it lugs 1000rpm at like 38 mph, and if i hit a slight incline at that point it actually does kind of vibrate a bit for a second, not downshift
i have some heavier tires so that doesnt help but for sure that 5th gear is super stretched out

    15-16 mpg lol

Met an older than me geezer in the parking lot.
Asked my mileage, I said 140K.
He claimed almost 600K on an older 4 cyl / 4 sp.
Said the long block was original, only replacing wp, alt that sort of thing!
We agreed that fluids and filters were Key factors.

I get 420 miles per tank
I run stock tires and like my MPG

I run 35s on my F350 and it gets 19 MPG unloaded and 14 mpg hauling 10k behind it to OOB in ME

Sorry many. No way you're getting 450 range. I've had this engine for 8.5 years, 4th gen 4runner now 2015 taco

    I get 420 on a tank not 450.

add in about 19.5-20 gallons and reset trip indicator
