Walmart is the easiest place to get the black for cheap. I'm still debating grabbing some rubber mat, as someone else in this thread did, for the times we take them swimming.

You can check with a local carpet/ flooring store for scraps.

I took mine from a scraps off a site at work. It's commercial grade with a little padding sewn onto the bottom.

This one got past me. They are twins! That is awesome. I didn't hinge anything but I was just revisiting this thread to think about doing that. Did you end up building one?

I finally got around to building my own dog platform. Used some ideas from you guys but ended up making a custom template to make sure it fit just how I wanted it to.

I actually used the bolt holes from the seats to secure my platform with longer M8-1.25 bolts which is not something I had seen done on here yet but I doubt I'm the first person with that idea.

I still plan on adding some hinged doors to access the storage compartments and carpet over the entire platform.

I am tall so I still needed the seat to slide all the way back but had to make sure at least a 12pk would still fit...

He immediately jumped back in the front seat but hes warming up to it.

So i've had my tacoma for around a month now and I was looking for better ideas for my dog in the back and stumbled across this thread. I took some of the ideas here and made my own version.

    The requirements were:
    • Platform had to be removable easily
    • Still wanted access to the storage compartments
    • Dog has plenty of room without moving passenger seat forward
    • Able to still use one of the back seats if needed.
Here is how much room he had before I made the platform (he wasnt happy with it and I had to move the passenger seat all the way forward):

    The build:

I took out the stupid center console in the back because it really didnt hold anything I wanted in it and took up a lot of room. Only 2 bolts held it in place.

I then decided that I could use that extra space for the dog platform and still use the other seat if needed. Also in order to use the storage compartments that are not removable, I had to make the platform the same level as them. So a bunch of measuring and checking the fit as I built each piece I came up with this. There are only 2 supports and it is solid.

He has plenty of room now and can see out the window and I still have access to the storage compartment. The only thing left to do was cover it with felt so he doesnt slide all over. I also might remove that seat to give him a little more room. Not sure how easy that is though.

Here is the finished product covered in felt. Leaving the storage compartment uncovered looked funny so I covered that too. Dont mind the patch I made over the latch, my first cut wasnt pretty. It was a learning experience covering it with felt material :)

The platform lifts right out no problem and fits into the truck perfectly.

Today I will get to test it out when I take him to go mountain biking!

Spent more time looking through this thread than actually assembling the platform. (I know I know this is a second gen forum) Picking up carpet tomorrow before work. Thanks, all. image.jpgimage.jpg

That looks good too. Damn, I wish Toyota had stuck with that earlier back seat design

Did this today. I just used a $9 fatigue mat from Harbor Freight and a $20 entryway carpet from Home Depot that's a pet hair magnet. I also put down some carpet saver plastic to try and catch the dog hair before it hits the Tacoma carpet, but man that stuff is hard to work with. I'll find an alternative for that another day.

That looks really nice. Too bad Toyota didn't stick with that style of rear seats.

I pretty much gave up on the dog hair thing. I'm hoping that, at some point, they'll have an optional Golden Retriever colored interior available. ;)

@frankiejr I really like your idea. Currently, I have some memory foam layers covered with sheets back there, but it isn't for the dog as much as it is for me on my "required" lunch breaks. So I made myself a bed for napping. Thankfully I'm pretty short, so I fit back there pretty nicely. Dog only comes into the truck when the weather isn't fair.
