I bet they make a huge difference, when riding in my friends 09 4Runner limited with the Jbl system I get very jealous.

Yea, I had some favors from an upholsterer friend of mine to use so he sewed it up for me, I just gave him the original cardboard template I made and it worked out perfect, he had the fabric and foam laying around.

There are 2 boards, only the back one is bolted down and a piano hinge along the entire length that holds them together.

I wanted to be able to access everything under it, so it had to be hinged.

I should point out that I used the 4 bolts that you did not use(Replaced with longer bolts). The 2 you used, I have drilled inlays on the underside so the bolt heads do not hit the board. A few other places have been contoured and massaged as well to get it to lay flat.

Honestly for trying it out and seeing what best serves me I drug out a pressure treated 4x4 post and am going to cut it about 6.5” or 7” and use one in each corner and a shorter one in the middle I think.

I’m also looking a maybe cutting it in half and making two halves. Not sure but priority is to have it in and level and go from there!

Also adding a couple d-rings under those bolts for a tie down point. Or even some fancy “L-TRAC” down the road. Some small bungee nets wouldn’t be so bad either. Hahaha

I need to see if my platform is wide enough for using one of those “twin” bolt holes like you used. I believe there may be enough there to capture it.

    10-4 thanks for the update!

By chance can you post a pic of the board folded open so I can see the hinge?

I may go that way as it would be nice to have a hinged but strong surface.

If I remove the whole metal crossmember part I lose my retaining holes for the stock plastic bins which I like the tubs they provide.

Sure I will take some pics at lunch when I go home, I left those metal pieces installed because I wanted to leave the tubs they provided as well. I just took the tops off the 2 tubs.

    Thanks man!

I’ve almost convinced myself to do two halves, If you lay a flat piece of board on top of those doors it’s flat as can be, lol...

Looking at the underside of the doors there are plenty of support cross braces in the plastic. I may drill two holes on it and run a carriage from the top but I’m not wanting to keep putting holes in places, hahaha

Sounds like you’re figuring it out what will work best. Be sure to post some pics when you’re done.

Last thing I need to do is the legs, cut some 2x4 and put some hinges will be my solution.

    Looks fantastic man!

Thanks for getting me those pics too!

Are those piano hinges at Home Depot or the like?

Oh and will the 2x4 not fit with your back wall in place?

Yes they are some sort of kitchen cabinet hinge, my buddy who made all this for me makes kitchens and bathrooms for a living.

The 2x4 legs I was talking about is for when its laying down, you can see in the pics I just have some 4x4's cut to the right length and sitting in place right now. I want those to be 2x4's on hinges hanging from the bottom of the platform. So when its up, they fold down on the hinge and are not pointing out trying to hurt you.

I got my hinges at Home Depot. They are only a couple of bucks for a pair.

I am really liking the idea of two separate hinged doors.

    Hmm

I get them at work, they are stainless steel marine grade d-rings. Very sturdy little guys. I have put them all over my truck, I love them :cookiemonster:

You can get them on Amazon I am sure.

This looks great! My only concern would be easy cleaning - maybe wrapping in a material that is non-slip and easy to clean up?

Yea this is what I am thinking as well. For the dogs I have blankets and things that cover it all up, but you are right a non-slip easy clean surface would make it ideal.
