Accidentally redlined my engine upon startup. Did I do any damage?

I have a 2014 Tacoma that is new to me and when I was cleaning out the floor mats I accidentally installed them in a manner that depressed the gas pedal to the floor. I went to start up my truck and scared the crap out of me when the tach went all the way up near the redline. I had driven the car for a few miles before shutting it off for about 20 minutes while I cleaned out the interior so I’m hoping there’s was some oil left on the internals to prevent any wear. I’m concerned because I don’t think the oil pump could have primed enough to get oil pressure to the rod bearings and I’m worried I may have done some damage. What do you all think?

    Doubtful any measurable damage occurred.

And there's no way to measure it anyway, so drive on!

I'm assuming it redlined for less than a minute, as mentioned unless you see oil seepage around the head gasket you should be fine.
How many miles are on it? Have you done any service to it before it redlined?

Thanks for the replies everyone! I started it and it got to right around redline for just a second before I realized something wasn’t right and was able to shut it off. Truck has 85k miles and oil was changed about 1000 miles ago. Glad to hear I probably didn’t do any damage!

Did you hit the limiter? It makes a missing sound. 2014 should have it.

You stated near near redline. My old 05 ( manual ) wouldn't let me actually redline it before it would start shutting itself down. Otherwise I would have redline it more often getting up on the highway.

I don’t think I hit the limiter but it got to around 5k rpm. It was hard to tell since everything happens to fast.

Where's the redline at? 5k shouldn't be an issue. The limiter would kick in and do its job anyway. Just keep on truckin'

Redline is ECU controlled as a rev limiter.

The point that the ECU cuts almost never matches the tachometer display.

Neither speedos nor tachs are particularly accurate.

If you wind it up enough to hit the limiter, it's pretty spooky the first time you experience it. But it's not hurting a thing.

So sounds like hitting the limited occasionally isn’t an issue but in my situation, it was immediately upon firing the engine up. Since the oil pump is driven off the crankshaft, I’m assuming I would have gotten sufficient oil pressure at some point during the engine revving up to 5k rpm. Im thinking since there would have been residual oil on the internals, it would have been protected enough until the oil pressure built?

Still not sure why Toyota didn’t give us a clear flood mode.
If we would have it, you would have been asking why the truck didn’t start.

Instead, we have to pull the EFI Fuse/Relay to crank the engine for a No Start.

Anyways, if the engine was warm you probably didn’t do any damage.
Like @Clearwater Bill said, drive it. That’s about all you can do.
Keep an eye on the coolant and temps, that will be the first sign “IF” you did any damage.
Which, like I said, I doubt you did:thumbsup:
