I'm a Sr. Auditor with the U.S. Dept of Interior. Though I worked briefly for the IRS, the bulk of my accounting career was in the private sector, first as Staff Accountant and then as a Financial Analyst.

70 views and no replies? It would be nice to know that I'm not the only bean counter/financial professional in this forum...

HAHAHA! I turned down Treasury OIG because of the lack of travel!

Keep checking on USAJOBS, HS OIG was hiring like MAD. I had interviews for their Ft. Lauderdale and Houston field Offices but didn't get the job! :(

Not only do they travel like mad, you get a cool HS badge, so that you NEVER get to do an Airport security check while on official business!

Basically you would go the "back door" way!!!

In any event, DOD Audits also travel quite a bit.

I do a bit of traveling, but not enough. I mainly choose this office to move back to Denver (our Bureau HQ's are in Lakewood, CO) after I make GS 12.

    Good luck!

Senior Internal Auditor here for a large toy company, but did a few years in public accounting before coming here.

Actually looking to make a move from audit to the accounting side, I'm not in love with IA.

You want to manage an accounting team?

Dang, IA must suck for ya! What is it, the traveling? Inquring minds would like to know...

PS: I worked for a regional firm for 10 weeks, from which after my last day I slept for a week, before going job hunting. How big was your firm, I mean was it local, regional, national or Big 4?

Somewhere in the accounting group where there is real growth potential. In IA there is no room for advancement and if you do move up, you hit a ceiling very quickly. Not to mention the process of performing anything involves constant road blocks and speedbumps.

I want something faster paced with actual visibility to financial reporting.

I worked for McGladrey for 5 yrs, they are a national firm even though most people have never heard of them.

I have a friend who LOVED IA, and regrets leaving. Not saying that this is your case at all, but I'll explain.

Obviously his reports were seen by upper management, so he and his team had upper managements ear. Once they moved on, those enemies they created along the way, and the lack of having upper managements ear and easy access, made them vulnerable. They were all gone within 3 years. Again not saying that this is what will happen to you, but I'm sure craps like that happens all the time.

Good luck, frankly I think that financial reporting sucks, but I do agree, they do move up quick!

Hey everyone. Accountant/Finance guy here. I work at health system in Virginia as a Finance Consultant. I do budgets, feasibilities, and other analysis "as assigned." Working on my CPA, I got the business environment under my belt, failed regulation, taking the financial reporting next.

I see you guys work for the government. I just applied for an analyst position with the coast guard. Here's to hoping.

I wish you luck! The only CG Analyst I know, got the job because he served as a Commission Officer in the CG, so he knew the job and had his TS Security Clearance.

Even if you don't get it, keep trying. Working for Uncle Sam as a civilian is can be quite challenging, but also VERY rewarding, as with all the free time you get...

I'm a Risk Management Bank Examiner for the FDIC. It's not bank auditing, but that's the easiest way to explain it.

For you guys that like travel...you definitely get it with this job. I'm in DC right now for training/conferences as I type this.

EDIT: I highly recommend the FDIC...we get federal benefits (holidays, TSP plan, etc) but since our funding is private (banks pay us insurance premiums), our pay and benefits are a lot better than a standard GS pay scale.
