Wasn’t hijacking man. I got $30k from insurance from a ‘14 in ‘19. I bought it for $36k new and drove it for 5 years.

I tried Craigslist once summer 2019. Got about 10 replies after posting it 12pm Saturday..a couple of tire kickers but one in particular who bought it was a dealer. It was a 15 year old Rav4 with 160K and needed some paint work on several panels but was adult owned. At 12pm Sunday I was signing the title and he paid my full asking.

    Never tried Facebook Marketplace though

I could just be the anomaly though, only the once. My wife and I rarely buy vehicles and when we do we just keep them long term.

I’m sure there are still legit and good people who use Craigslist and your anecdote proves that. I’ve sold a few items on there but never valued past $300.

Hmmm..come to think of it the most costly thing after that was a metal bender/brake I had. $600 was the price if I recall..I have had people come to my house which I don't love but that item was way too heavy to load up by myself, I just tell my wife to watch the driveway for any issues.

Buying, I have scored a few bikes there. I think on either end you can usually get a feel for it after a couple of emails/texts though.

Back to the most recent (salient) point, FB has produced one or two “scammy” feeling inquiries, as well as a few legitimate, and CL has been surprisingly effective as well.

Selling privately you'll have to weed through the bs, unfortunately, but you'll get more than if you traded.
I sold my 2015 TRD Sport privately this past March and it was three weeks of that type of crap before the buyer came along.
I listed the truck for book since it was immaculate with half the mileage they typically had for the age. I had tracracs, oversized BFG tires, tube steps, and some other bits and pieces I can't remember. You seldom get the money back for your options but with the current market i'd think you could get full asking. (Check NADA as well as KBB)
Seven tire kickers low balling me, had one even pretending to be military for a sympathy card which didn't go over so well with me since I'm a veteran. I lucked out with the 6th of 7 people in his opening email say "I'll give you full asking today for your truck no questions asked".
I told him I was trying to go through people in the order they emailed and be fair, the next day dealt with two more people lowballing me again, emailed him, said the truck was his. Done.
Met him at my bank, he looked the truck over and took it for a test drive alone while I held his kids and wallet hostage. Came back all smiles and we did the exchange at my credit union. He also had a credit union and we actually just did a fund transfer from his account to mine, verified with the bank manager, signed the title over to him, and off he went. Cash is king as well, but would personally only do that kind of deal at a bank where it can be verified with machines and such. I used to sell Ducatis for a living and you'd be amazed how crafty people get trying to sneak counterfeit cash into stacks. Caught it on more than one occasion with the ol' marker trick.

Edit: Assuming it's 4wd, NADA values it around $19,850.

This is a great story for comparison. There's certainly a bit of nonsense I've had to sort through, but as I'm not rushed to sell, I can afford to do that. Thanks for sharing this.

You're in the best position for selling something where you're not in a hurry or in 'need' of selling.
My Taco was paid off, I hadn't found my inferno TRD Tundra yet, and didn't need to sell the Taco to pay for the Tundra- so had no pressure to sell for anything less than asking and would make that known and move on to the next person.
"There's an ass for every seat". The right person will come along eventually for ya.

R U wanting to sell prior to move ?

    Or moving with it ?

Set your private sale price & stick with it...no dicker on the sticker

Here in Utah Tacoma's sell themselves..or by word of mouth...I've sold a couple

Cash price as listed..whether it a bag of cash or a certified bank check (preferred)

Go to your bank with title & verify the check & then deposit....sign title/done deal

Never did the FB or CL sales.....I've heard stories..none good

    GLWYS....also suggested above.....keep it.....everyone needs a reliable ride !

I'd like to sell prior to the move, but that's not until June. Otherwise, it'll probably get shipped to Florida. And if that happens, well-- I have a Tacoma for a reason, and I certainly won't be heartbroken if it ends up spending the next 100k miles by the beach.

As far as test drives go... what i've done in the past is drive the prospective buyer around and they tell me what they would like to do. "Hey, can you brake a little harder coming to this next stop?", "Would you mind taking off a little harder than normal at the next light?" I tell them they can play with all the buttons/knobs while i'm driving to make sure everything works... I sold my heavily modified Fox mustang this way... hell no am I letting some random take that car out for a spin. If the buyer doesn't accept this way of going about the test drive then they can find another seller.

Regarding cash buyers, i've used this to my advantage in the past and politely ask that if I pay cash can the buyer list the sale price on the Bill of Sale much less than the actual sale price. I mean, no one in their right mind would want to willingly give our disasterous government (CA) more money than they have to. But like a previous poster has mentioned it works better on low sale prices (less than $10k). I'm trying to sell my wifes 2017 Jetta via private party on CL and FB and you just gotta weed out the weirdos. No luck with the sale yet, however.

I'm surprised Cali hasn't jumped on the no-lube train that Maine is currently chugging along on *choo choo!*
Doesn't matter what the bill of sale says or whatever private sale amount is written. When you go to register they base your sales tax off the MSRP of the vehicle in the NADA/KBB, regardless of what condition it's in or what you actually paid for it. Using my Tundra and MT-09 motorcycle as an example, I paid $32,500. Book said it was valued over $37k, I paid the tax on the $37k. Got my bike for $6,200, paid tax for a $9k+ bike. Legal theft.
They also base your yearly excise on the same principle. Don't even get me started on that shit.

MA started that in Nov 1991. I bought my Camaro for a cheap price at a government auction no less and went to the RMV, the guy looked it up and said "oh you're gonna get whacked on sales tax *chuckle*"

Me: Yeah even though I bought it from the DEA who I don't think will lie about the price..but that's how you do things and if I don't like it I can go shit in my hat. Stop laughing, give me my paperwork and let me get out of this place"

I bought my 2010 4x4 V6 SRS in Feb. of 19 from a friend of my wife in PA. She wrote up the bill of sale for 10k less than I paid and I paid the 6% sales tax on the reduced amount. A month or so later I got an inquiry from the State as their perceived value didn't match what I paid. I just sent them a copy for the reduced bill of sale. PA may catch up on things someday haha.
