My wife and I just moved into our current house a few months ago. We've never had to deal with oak trees / acorns before. Now that fall is here, the oak trees on our property have dumped a gazillion acorns everywhere. We're out in the country, so we don't need to clean them up from a "must keep the yard looking neat and tidy" perspective, but to walk on them is like walking on a table covered with marbles or ball bearings.... too easy to slip and fall and break a leg.

Do any of you have any suggestions for ways to pick / gather them all up? Our p[roperty is 1 acre, all dirt, uneven, so raking/shoveling would not work very well. I know there are companies that make leaf vacuums for lawn mowers and such, but T $1,000+, that's out of our budget range.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Now that B&D setup may be perfect. I have a leaf blower already, I will look into this to see if it could work.

I could use my leaf blower to just blast all the acorns into my neighbor's yard........ but I'm not that much of an asshole ;)

I've used similar devices to pick up used brass at gun ranges. The ones I have used are pretty much useless..... though due to the difference in shape (straight vs spherical) this might work. But I have a 1 acre yard to clean up o_O:bananadead:

Maybe one of those leaf rakes that you pull behind the lawn mower? :notsure:

I am having an explosion of acorns this year (seacoast NH), so I bought the nut picker-upper linked above... and it works ok. But it really can only pick up a swath about 6" wide.... I have many 6" wide swaths of lawn covered in acorns, so I gave up. Now I just rake them as best I can into a big pile and shovel them into a wheelbarrow.

This happened a couple of years ago... and one of the consequences was a year after the acorn explosion, there was a huge increase in the squirrel population (because food was so plentiful for a year) so much so that you couldn't drive 5 minutes without one darting in front of you and the roads being littered with the dead bodies of the lil' guys.

I'm in the same situation, 2 acres with tons of oak trees and acorns. I found that plastic rakes with tines close together work well, they get the majority of the acorns.

Oaks tend to have "mast" crops every few years:

I have oaks, used different methods, the rake and wheelbarrow works the best. That being said, I only do some areas , squirrels can have the rest.

You’ll either let nature be nature , or you’ll have to use a rake. There’s really no easy solution. My entire property is covered with Oak Trees. It sounds like someone is throwing rocks in my yard all day and night this time of year. I just blow mine into the woods and off my lawn. The deer, chipmunks and squirrels are a 24/7 clean up crew as well.

If you can't blow them off the yard, blow them into one spot and rake them up.

I have lived under the mighty oak for some 50 years.
Do nothing, the animals will eat most of them and the rest will rot. A few may sprout but you’ll either catch them with the lawn mower or let them grow.
Lawn fanatics won’t believe any of this but it is what works for me.

    Much appreciated, everyone.

My only real worry, is that both my wife and I are semi-disabled. My balance isn't as good as it once was due to a spinal cord injury many years ago, and it's all too easy to slip on some of these darn things and end up ass over tea kettle, because I can't move quikly enough to compensate for the slipping and sliding around. In the areas of gratest concern, I have been doing the rake / shovel / wheelbarrow method. so far have scopped up almost 2 wheelbarrow's full, just around the back patio area. We've both slipped a couple times, but haven't actually fallen yet. I was mostly curious if there was a fairly affordable and easy solution out there that I was not yet aware of :)
