Kind of misleading. Even in automatic mode, you're in sunlight, so there's no issue with getting a good shutter speed.

Although, I would argue that the photos are a bit underexposed. The camera matrix metered and much of the frame was bright dirt being hit by direct sunlight, so the camera was exposing mainly for the dirt, as opposed to subject (rider).

they look quality enough for my purposes. I was impressed with them but I'm camera/photo illiterate.

That camera is also about 4 years old and my mom paid like $350 for it? I can't remember. I think the new ones are 10 MP.

Set camera to manual mode. If you have one. Shutter speed of at least 1/200 will freeze most action shots. Set aperture to wide open. Smallest number. 1.8 or whatever is smallest. ISO to 800 or higher.

With that camera, if you go much over iso 800, your probably going to have a lot of noise in your pic. You can get rid of it with photoshop or something similar, but not all of it.

    Hope this helps.

If you want real good pics, ditch that cam and get a dslr. I think the Nikon d3000 is around 450$ with a lens and a bag.

I have a relatively inexpensive Panasonic 10 mp point and shoot with 5x optical. It has the modes along with image stabilization. I use the sport mode in addition to the burst mode when I want to capture fast action movement. Works great and small enough to fit in your shirt pocket when you don't want to drag along a big SLR.
