I’m looking to sell my truck since I barely drive it anymore and a potential buyer asked to see underside photos. He got nervous seeing the rust. I told him that’s just the exhaust but the frame itself looks great.

Is he coming up with excuses to back out, or am I in the wrong?BCB21D60-6F6F-4C73-999A-13F2F64519E1.jpg3176E0E2-5CAD-40B6-81C5-39E0DDD83E2B.jpg

^What these guys said. Your buyer doesn't know what the F they're looking at. If they wanna see some actual rust tell 'em to go look at trucks in the rust belt states.

That's just dirty, maybe a tiny bit of surface rust in places but I've seen more rust on trucks fresh of the boat from the factory.

    Mint to my eyes.

What an idiot. To be fair you're in Southern California. A speck of rust would scare them more than the NRA

Thanks everyone. There’s definitely mud on there but I’ve taken good care of it.

Figured he just got nervous when I told him he offered a fair price.

Get rid of him and move to the next person in line. He'll make you crazy. FWIW: I was under the impression that Tacoma's have a stainless-steel exhaust system? (the pipes at least, but I have never heard of, or experienced a cat or muffler rust-through back to at least the 2000's on cars I have owned.) They might show some surface rust, but it takes a LONG time to get any perforation.

TRD exhaust is stainless. Stock is certainly not, they all surface rust pretty bad within a couple years regardless of environment but isn’t really an issue unless you see road salt. Usually the muffler falls apart in winter weather states. Easy way to tell a vehicle probably has rust issues if you see a cheap ass non-OEM exhaust welded in, in a winter weather state.

I am the second owner but I’m pretty sure it has the TRD exhaust. Or maybe just the muffler was swapped and not the rest?

I would still take it to a car wash with an undercarriage spray if you can spare the $5. Any prospective buyer should get undercarriage pictures that accurately reflect the condition. Some of the dirt residue there is hard to distinguish from rust.

I should definitely give it a good washing. I wasn’t too serious about selling until this last week so I’ll put a little more effort into making it looks its best.

Just for reference: pic of the stock OEM exhaust on my 2014 after eight winters in New England. Muffler is the same: just very light surface rust on surfaces that still have a shine on them.
