Does that mean the 2.7l will be 6sp or auto or both?

They will no longer offer the 5 speed manual transmission for the 4 cylinder engine. 2018 on up, will only offer the 4 banger as an automatic configuration. The only manual in future Tacomas will be the V6 model TRD sport 4x4, TRD Off Road and TRD pro trim levels, 6 speed manual.

As someone said earlier, it's Harsh and an end to an era for the 4x4 4 banger 5 speed manual. Sad news for a lot of people, I really hope this fucks up sales for Toyota, there are a lot of things you don't fuck with and the 5 speed 4x4 4 banger isn't one of them. Shame on Toyota.

Is the "i" part of ECT-i new? I remember them promoting the ECT transmission, but is the "intelligence" a new tune?

Disappointing to learn the 2018's are actually downgrades because you pay more for all that unnecessary and expensive-to-fix Toyota "Safety Sense" stuff yet can't get the uncomplicated and bulletproof 5 speed with the 4 cyl. And the lethargic performance problems of the V6 apparently havn't been fixed. Toyota definately knows how to make that V6 a powerful, eager and quiet performer because I recently rented a 2018 Camry XSE that has the same V6 as the 3rd gen Tacoma and boy is it an eager beaver yet quiet and refined performer - could fool you into thinking its a V8.

I thought this was going to be an interesting thread but it just turn out to be a bunch of bitching Tacoma owners.

Toyota jumps into the latest technology with safety features using
    • Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) standard on all grades.
Subaru seems to be a leader in this. Mixed feeling on it I guess. Mostly good though and it can be turned off. It is forward thinking in terms of safety!! which is good.

On the flip side, looks like this "advanced technology truck" will still use 60's technology rear drum brakes (no mention per op post) and will not have better stopping ability, you know for safety. PATHETIC.

From an auto Corp perpective, maybe it makes sense somehow. Sad, because that’s a sacred configuration. I consider myself VERY lucky to have purchased when I did, no TSS-P and the last of the legacy builds. For me, Toyota and 4 cyl small truck were synonymous.

Don’t know about Subaru being a leader in safety....

    Not likely....

How many people do you really think buy the 5 speed 4 banger?

About the same as the number that were built, I’d reckon.

If they killed it then it must not have been enough - same story as the single cab, same story as the 5 lugger.

People bitched at first but it didn't affect sales.

Who knows if it was or wasn’t enough. Could have been an issue with a few different things. But every one they have built will sell. They didn’t sell a lot because they didn’t BUILD a lot. Instead, they built a neutered 6 cyl Tacoma tailored for ex Jetta and passenger car owners to jump on the truck bandwagon. Which they did. And ramped down 4 cyl production (I don’t know why because I skip those meetings at Toyota corporate) an above post someone had mentioned they hope Toyota feels it for deleting the legend... but you’re correct. They won’t. They will make more money focusing away from the small 4x4 4 cyl and towards the new generation of Toyota truck -which is a station wagon that looks like a Toyota pickup and has the required heated seating for the soccer dad behind the wheel.

I can see them all sitting around at Toyota Corp, “we only sold 4500 SR 5spds last year, whelp time to ax it” I’d like to know average time spent on the dealers lot for each model code. I can pretty much guarantee 5spd 4x4s get snapped up quick.

In other words build what a majority of the customers want to continue sales.

People SAY they want new smaller trucks but they don't seem to BUY new smaller trucks.

I think it’s mostly that people see a vehicle they like, go to the dealership and buy one off the lot. I bet you half the people who bought a Tacoma didn’t even know the 4x4 5spd existed. Because they didn’t make many, and they don’t sit on dealer lots.
