Then why build things that don't sit on the lots and what people don't know about?

Do strippers really sell that fast or are they relegated to dealer runabouts and fleet sales?

If it makes sense to sell a 5 speed 4-banger. They would have done so.

If anything, it's probably the engineers that wanted to get rid of it. Not the bean counters.

If you talk to a modern engineer, they will tell you how outdated and archaic the manual is.

The majority of Tacoma buyers in my opinion want a Toyota truck, great mileage, and with a hefty side of status “it’s a v6 Bro!” When they trade in their Acura rsx. I’ve had one 6cyl taco, the rest were 4cyls. The company I keep these days always assume 4 bangers are go cart engines and sneer at the idea, but really, they don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about. I don’t want to get into what I think the current Tacoma buying demographic is... but it does dictate the direction of where these trucks are going. Companies gotta maximize profit. Toyota isn’t running a soup kitchen. This isn’t unicef. But I’d wager if Toyota had built twice as many 4 bangers, they would have sold just the same.

There are purists out there that insist on a 4x4 4 banger manual. There’s an old timer about 50 meters from me right now who won’t buy a third gen because HIS config is regular cab 4x4 5spd, so he’s got this rad little 2nd gen out back and its the last of its kind.

Or the dealers aren't requesting them. Do you order a stripper 5 speed 4 banger in hopes that old man or purist comes in to buy it or fill the lot space with dbsb sr5s and TRDs that you know WILL sell no matter who comes in?

    Can't TRD's also get leather in '18?

The fact is that production for all Tacomas is limited to under 200K per year. It is more profitable to sell models that sticker at $34K and above, if you can. I've only seen one entry level SR on a dealer's lot over the two years while I had an area dealer service my vehicle under the free Toyota Care.

A second factor, double cabs have been what sells for a few years now. In my opinion, the 2.7 four cylinder is too under powered launch a loaded double cab uphill onto a freeway, especially with an automatic.

Anecdotal: When I bought my 2015 Access Cab, Model #7513 at the end of that model year, I had a feeling that the days of a basic entry level truck were just about over by viewing the mix on dealer lots. It was September and there were just two 4 cylinder trucks available with a 5 speed manual within a 100 mile radius of Austin, TX.

Bottom line, if anyone wants a Tacoma with a manual transmission, be ready to pony up $34K versus $22.5K that I paid. In total my total was a couple of hundred dollars over $24K with dealer fees and TTL.

I'll raise my hand. I was one of those old timers. I agree those double cab TRDs WILL SELL.

I'm glad to hear that TRD models won't be forced into leather unless it is wanted. It's not wanted by me, but wouldn't be a deal breaker if I had to take it.

Feel the same way. I would also prefer to have durable cloth interior instead of leather ................. and also prefer rear disk breaks too for the added safety on stopping, but I know thats going overboard apparently.

    Uhhh the USA :der:

What I meant with that post was that they aren’t making regular cab anymore so he won’t be getting a 3rd gen like that.

Except now a buyer can't choose to not get fluff safety features and Toyota can bump their invoice pricing and grab more margin.

I don’t know about how dealers get what they get, I’ve heard sometimes it’s not always up to them. Nobody really orders anything anymore, and no dealer has ever been left “hoping” to sell a Tacoma in any config. Any and all will sell. And most certainly the regular cabs of old and the extra cabs still being produced. Often times, double cab is the only option for people who intend to buy off the lot on the day, rather than wait for another option or even SEE any other option on the lot. Either because the dealer didn’t get one or the extra cab that was on the lot got snatched up. I don’t think there has ever been a dealer down in the dumps because he was worried that his extra cab manual wouldn’t sell.

Is it possible they pair the 2.7L with the 6 speed manual transmission?

I wouldn't call it pathetic. So you really think that disc brakes will give you better stopping power than drum brakes on the rear of a truck? Let's really put some thought into this. The rear brakes are only responsible for roughly 20% of the braking. The weight transfer to the front while braking with a truck prevent the rear brakes from contributing to the stopping power. Installing rear discs won't even be noticeable. Let's look at the advantages of using drum brakes on a Tacoma. 1) parking brakes that work and hold better than disc brakes 2) drum brakes don't rust out like disc brakes do 3) longevity, Tacoma rear brakes shoes last an incredibly long time 4) sand and rocks tend to get caught between the pads and rotors on disc brakes. GM used disc brakes on their trucks for a short period of time and because of all the issues went back to drum brakes.

Now let's get back on topic.
