If sand and rocks are a big concern, then why isn't the front breaks drum breaks too on Tacoma? especially with being used at 80%.
Didn't know that about GM. Frontiers have all disc break system and 4x4, no problems there as they stay with a more advanced disc system.

also with the advanced safety system, they would want disc on all wheels anyway --- perhaps better break pulsing action and control match up better with this new safety system versus the old drum break system.

    also with the advanced

Someone else posted no more manual with 4 cyl. That looks to be false. 4 cyl 4x4 will have a 6 speed manual option! Not on 2x4 though - only auto.
I'm not sure how to post the pdf, but go to google and search for the pdf to download: 2018 Tacoma Product Information

scroll down on that information from Toyota and it shows the 4cyl with 6 speed manual option there

If Toyota offered rear disc brakes. You wouldn't get a huge difference in braking like some people think.

And it looks like the manual transmission will only be available with the four door version. Damn. That truck will be super gutless.

Page 2 and page 5 on that pdf seem to show 2018 4 cyl with 6 speed manual is for Access cab 4x4 only ...... unless I'm overlooking something on that Toyota sheet

    2x4 Access cab - 4cyl - auto only
    2x4 doubly cab - 4 cyl - Auto only
    4x4 Access cab - 4 cyl - Auto / Manual
4x4 Double cab - not offered in 4 cyl

Hmm. I saw the Access Cab with the V6 manual transmission but then I only saw the 2.7L six speed m/t with the quad Cab.

Sand and rocks affect the rear brakes because the front tire kick up dirt from the road. Disc brakes are used on the front because they dissipate heat better which is good when they are doing 80% of the braking. Heat dissipation is not a concern on the rear when the brakes are doing so little work. Disc brakes on the rear of a truck do only one thing well, sells trucks to the uneducated buyer. If Toyota ever does go to disc brakes on the rear owners would be bitching the parking brake doesn't hold as well and they have to replace the pads more often then the drum shoes

So if discs in rear don’t do anything shouldn’t other manufacturers of trucks do drums to save money and have more profit ?

Rear disc brakes look cool so they sell trucks. Kind of like the fake hood scoop on the Tacoma.

There is just a perception that rear disc work better on a truck. They don't.

We need to keep this thread on topic. I'm done

It has nothing to do with looking cool or not. Bottom line is having drum brakes 2017 is embarrassing. Period. Especially in a truck this expensive. This isn't an early 90's econo-box.

The fucking YARIS has 4 wheel discs like a proper 21st century car, but our Tacomas don't.

Drum brakes are old tech, but it’s good tech and not necessarily better for our applications. Cooking bacon over a gas range is old tech too when comparing it against cooking on an induction range, and a person could explain to me the benefits of cooking on one over the other but in the end I still stopped at the appropriate distance/ate bacon. Tons of stuff is old tech and still relevant. I would be pissed if the performance difference was huge... but the value of disc over drum as another posted is just mass perception.

Well, it looks like GM went to drum breaks back in 2012 area, but today new models have 4 wheel disc breaks again like most other truck manufacturers today - those pesky bean counters didn't stop them from advancing. I have a truck with 180K miles with disc rears, all my miles too. When I changed the rear disc breaks pads not long ago (at 150K miles for rears first time change - changed front pads several times though), I didn't change the rear emergency break pads as they were fine. Original emergency pads still work fine at today 180K miles so I don't have to change those emergency pads pads often. Stating disc breaks sells to the uneducated buyer is not a fair statement, as outside of Toyota, I do not know of any other manufacture staying with drum breaks for a mid-size truck, which makes everyone else uneducated driving anything else other than a Tacoma - we know that is just not true.

Anyway, the 2018 Tacoma product information PDF shows it will still stay with the 10.75" front vented breaks and the old technology 10" drum breaks. No need to mention breaks anymore as that is what it comes with. Toyota still seems to hold its value well dispite the old technology rear drum breaks - pretty much alone in the category, but it is what it is.
