    Hi everyone,

So as others I'm sure have also experienced, I got my tailgate stolen from my 2016 Tacoma a year or so ago. I decided to buy a new one from a wholesaler out of state as I have a $1,200.00 deductible on my insurance (and I knew my rate would go up if I reported it to them) and they had like-new gates for $500.

However upon getting it I found out that the wiring harness for it does not fit the one on my truck. I have a 4-pin style similar to the one pictured here:
but the tailgate I received has the newer 8-pin harness similar to the one pictured here:

Is there an adapter or some way to get these two different harnesses or am I basically SOL at this point? I've tried searching here and googling it but it's such a niche issue I couldn't find anything. I know going through insurance would have prevented this but my budget just wouldn't allow it.

Anyway, any help would be massively appreciated.

    Thanks!

Purchase the missing connector and de-pin the one you have, don't cut. Insert remove pins into connector that matches the vehicle.

Tape off the extra shield wire.

Wow this is incredibly helpful! Thank you very much!

I'm no electrician but I've done some basic stuff like wiring up an aftermarket horn on an old motorcycle so hopefully this should be doable for me. Thanks again!

    No problem.
The view of the wires on the pic is looking into the connector, not from behind. But you have the vehicle connector, use it to confirm the wire placement.

I haven't seen the hole the connector runs through, but it must be larger than the other years. I see potential to use that 2020 connector for the tailgate lock and the camera.:stirthepot:

Having a single connector would be fantastic. The opening is already rectangular.

The biggest hurdles are probably those silly plastic inserts which grip the loom and limit its diameter. The lock wires are lower gauge than camera so fitting all 6 into the small loom looked like a decent challenge. And if you already have two cables then not much benefit to combining into a single plug unless tailgate removal is a daily chore. Of course nobody forces anyone to use the plastic holder.

OP if you somehow got a tailgate with a lock actuator then you might want to take the time to connect it. Do you have 6 or more wires feeding your plug or only 4?

Did you ever resolve this? If anyone is checking this. I recently had the same issue, tail gate was stolen...

I now have a 2018 tailgate for my 2020 and can't plug in the backup camera. Would love to trade someone for their camera that is having this issue as well.

    I need a 2019+ camera
    I have a brand new 2016-2018 camera.
The tailgate I purchased was a take off from a plumbing company, was wrapped and in storage legit brand new.

It’s much more work to open the tailgate and replace a camera than de-pinning a connector.

Would you post a picture of the connector on the '18 tailgate and the one on your 2020?
Guess you can't, not enough posts for that. (Forum "Rules")

Oh, it’s TE 025? I can probably make an adapter for each way.

    Caribe, this guy?

So if it’s 8P and 8S TE 025 I can definitely get some of those and make adapters. Should be straightforward I’d think. Just need someone to confirm.

So we’d do 4 pos male to 6 pos female to allow a new truck to take an old tailgate and 4 pos female to 6 pos male to allow an old truck to take a new tailgate. Yeah? Just a matter of getting the pin maps right.

I think I found a solution but not 100% sure yet.
Wire Tail Gate No - Toyota (82182-04050) https://parts.toyotaofanaheim.com/oem-parts/toyota-wire-tail-gate-no-8218204050

This wire and plug will fit into my harness a the body end for sure. What I now need to know if it will fit into the camera side. Looks like the camera is the same for all models using a 6pin plug

    2018 Camera part number 86790-04040
    2020 camera part number 867b0-04040
Looks like the male pins and plug are identical.

I really don't want to cut or splice if I don't have to.

While looking into the wiring options, I also was still looking for my tailgate on market place and got a phot of the one linked here. I noticed a few small spots that have been difficult to clean off (surfboard wax)
I had the seller deliver it to me, I inserted the key in the lock and it turned! Dude knew he was F*Ck#d and bounced, leaving my tailgate with me.
